WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said after the shootings in Tucson Saturday, "We are going to get to the bottom of this, and we are going to get through this."

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at a political event in a Tucson Safeway, but was recovering after surgery. Police said 18 people were wounded and six were dead.

As for Giffords, Obama said, "She is currently at a hospital in the area and she is battling for life."

Among the dead were U.S. Judge John Roll and a 9-year-old child.

"We are still assembling all the facts," Obama said at the White House. "We don't know yet what provoked this unspeakable act." A suspect is in custody, but police have released few details about him.

The president praised Giffords as an outstanding public servant, adding, "Gabby Giffords was a friend of mine. … It's not surprising that Gabby was doing today what she always does,
she was listening" to her neighbors and her constituents.

"I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in including all the victims, including Gabby, in our thoughts and our prayers," Obama said " … I am hopeful she is going to pull through."

The president said his heart goes out to the families of those killed.

I always find it interesting when people start making assumptions with almost no information to base their assumptions on. A sure sign of a biased agenda.

    • The pitched battle over health care has unleashed a rash of vandalism and attacks directed at politicians, with at least 10 House Democrats reporting death threats or incidents of harassment or vandalism at their district offices over the past week.
    • More than 100 House Democrats met behind closed doors Wednesday afternoon with representatives of the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police. The lawmakers voiced what one senior aide who was present described as "serious concern" about their security in Washington and in their home districts when they return this weekend for the spring recess.
    • Usually only the congressional leadership has regular personal protection from the Capitol Police. But at least 10 lawmakers have been offered increased protection by law enforcement agencies, said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.).
    • Asked whether members are endangered, Hoyer said: "Yes. [There are] very serious incidents that have occurred."
    • Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer e-mailed senators and staffers Wednesday telling them to "remain vigilant." Gainer, a former Capitol Police chief, said in an interview that the warning was meant to "assuage people's fears."
    • But House Democrats say they are unnerved.
    • "Our democracy is about participation," Hoyer said. "Our democracy is about differing and debate and animated debate and passionate debate. But it is not about violence."

This incident had to do with the Healthcare vote.. and these shootings happened as the vote to repeal those same health care reforms.. coincidence?
