When the ship set sail, I was on it too
as unwell and as oppressed as you.

When the sailors slithered below deck
you were not the only one
whose holes were about to catch wreck.

You had only one, maybe two
I had maybe two, maybe three
as well as potential for a baby

but still you turned on me
    making me less than holy
    making my name synonymous
with the word starting with b.

    Oh, it’s disheartening
how I was made into your enemy.
    Oh, it’s disheartening
the disrespect that is shown me.

The work was soul breakingly hard
and your back not the only one scarred.

Day in, day out, threatening footsteps in the dark
my ruination considered nothing but a lark.

    Generations born, generations to raise
and still i went on, a life without praise
    from you
    my foundation
    my glue.

    Oh, it's disheartening
how into your enemy i was made.
    Oh, it's disheartening
a situation disastrous for plans laid.

Two hundred years until marcus garvey
and one love, one aim, one destiny.
    And I wish I didn’t miss you
    like sister angie stone
    but still when you come
    I got the corn pone.

Two hundred years since marcus garvey
and one love, one aim, one destiny.
    And I wish I didn't miss you
like I wish the sky was still blue.

    You are gone from me.
I am the wife, mother and sister of the disappeared.
Your last words ringing in my ear
words thrown disparagingly over your shoulder.

Heart heavy, like atlas with his boulder
my attention turns, focuses on the children
now denied their father, their brethren.
