Happy 85th Birthday Sir Sidney Poitier! This Actor, Film Director, Author, and Diplomat (the Bahamian ambassador to Japan), was the 1st Male Black Actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for The Defiant Ones in 1958 and the first Black Actor to win an Academy Award in 1963 for Best Actor in Lilies of the Field. Poitier directed "A Piece of the Action", "Uptown Saturday Night", "Let's Do It Again", and "Stir Crazy". The American Film Institute named Poitier one of the Greatest Male Stars of All Time and in 2009 President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He has won dozens of awards throughout his 60+ year career, and in 2002, he was given an Honorary Oscar, "For his extraordinary performances and unique presence on the screen and for representing the industry with dignity, style and intelligence."
