    momma shoulda told me
    not to ever
    take it personally
    that things never stay
the way they used to be
and just because you have brains and
talent doesn't mean you're gonna make it
that adults don't know everything -
they find out as they fake it

    momma shoulda told me
that even when love is good
    it's still gonna hurt
    and sometimes you forget
    the things you've learned
that your acquaintances will be many
    and your real friends few
that you'll meet more people who
don't care than people who do

    momma shoulda told me
    to jump into the world
to be more mean and less naive
    not to be afraid
to open my eyes and really see
    to take less crap
    and make demands
    to push people away sometimes
    and take a stand

    momma shoulda told me
    the things I
    taught myself
    I learned it all
    with very little help
    I made it
    I didn't die
    I look in the mirror
    I feel pride

Perhaps momma is standing there in her mirror with pride too; ...and guess who shoulda told her?
I guess sometimes we are our best "teachers"...of life. and like me, I learned life...through life.
gempis, I really loved this work, it was like I wrote the words myself, thanks for sharing this side of you and me

ohhhhh, girrllllllllll, this is so right on, do you think our mothers forgot to tell us these things cause they don't want us to feel that pain they had to endure in order to learn? I wish someone had, but really this poem lends itself to the flow of existence, simply truly beautiful

oldsoul, you really really touched me with your words. Thank you, and blessings to you.

Kimdricka, thanks - it's good to know you're feelin me.

queen, thanks for the honor of your words. Much love to you, sister.

You know, Randee, I almost wrote a disclaimer when I posted this. I don't think my momma was bad - I do think she was tryin to protect me. Her intentions were the best, but I wish she woulda told me anyway, naimean?

Thanks for the love on this, family. It really means a lot.
