    I was a surface dweller

    Peering through hazy things

Seeing things shallow men will always see

    The prettiest women

    The fly(est) gear

    I traveled that road

    Year after year

    Specializing in the physical

And what it meant to me

    To be king

    To a beautiful queen

Was the only thing to be

A “10” was on the low side

Of the standards I set for me

If she didn’t make heads turn

Then, she wasn’t the one for me

    She captivated the

    Heart and soul

    Of all those

    Who came her way

    But like ole boy in

    “Why Did I Get Married,”

She had nothing deep to say

~ I need your bank card, please ~

    Then came Clementine

    She didn’t have the
    Wavy, jet black, flowing hair
Or the latest, in designer jeans, to wear

She didn’t get pedicured at the local nail salon
    Or, manicured…
    With creative designs…for fun
    She didn’t have servants
    At her beck-n-call
    Or designer heels
    Two rolls deep
Lined up from wall to wall

She didn’t have the finest things
    Life has to give
Nor did she live the life
    She dreamed she would live
But what she had was something the young ones do not know
Like respect for self, and others…in all she would do

Her humble confidence whispered to all
    And the way she walked

    Well…you make the call

    She wasn’t possessed of
    An apple-bottomed be-hind
And her at-ti-tude wasn’t always of the right kind

    But I miss her

She will never be the cutest woman around
But that sparkle in her eyes would never be bound
By the physicality of the “too shallow” kind
That preyed on the weak and wearisome mind

She didn’t have a butter-pecan, or almond, color
Nor will she be the first pick of any brutha
But her smile would soften the cruelest man’s heart
With eyes that could pierce your deepest parts
And all the GOOD that’s known to man
    Is magnified
    Through the touch
    Of HER lovely hands

    No…she wasn’t
The most personable person, I know

She had ways that took some warming to
But the tender(est) of hearts…And the darkest hue
    And, within her eyes
    And smile,
    And soul
Were boundless riches worth more than gold

But I wasn’t ready for her

    Her conversational tones
    Were modest…and meek
    A servant, at heart,
But don’t take her for weak

Her carefree style is an asset, it’s true
An old school soul...that seemed to grow on you

    But she’s ugly

    Remember…
    I’m only a surface dweller
Who looks at the skin to determine the soul
But beauty is only skin deep
At least, that’s what I’m told
    By the old school playaz
    From back in da day
    But none of those guyz
    Would come out and play

    So, now I look deep
Under layers of Drama…and bared teeth
    Beneath the “Woman scorned” syndrome
    And the “wrath of one”
Where I once looked for physical beauty
    …and found none

PHYSICAL BEAUTY IS, MOST OFTEN, THE least IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE ONE HAS TO OFFER.

    With age comes wisdom...
And we come to learn that the surface is just that...the surface.
The real measure of the person comes from within...

I've never been a superficial person...I learn that concept
very young, it's nice to be attracted to the atractive but sometimes
a gem can be found in the least likely person we choose to ignore,
    because of imperfections.

I'm feeling you on this one, Baller.

    Nice scribe.

as i was told by a friend...

...so much of our choice selection/decision making is influenced by a society that instills in us a desire for nothing less than a "10." television. magazines. the internet. beauty contest. all forms of advertisements. everything is geared toward the cutest of the cute...the best of the best. subliminal messages that steer us toward a certain type of person. like the matrix, we have to separate ourselves from the collective...AND KNOW OUR OWN MINDS.

snugli...for this reason, i don't think she will ever be neglected, over looked, or in anyway forgotten. the world is centered around her. everyone else IS eating from the scraps of her table. CONSIDER THAT. I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO READING YOUR POEM ON THAT PARTICULAR SUBJECT, THOUGH.:) thanks for volunteering.

    POETS...thanks for reading.
