I finally made the jump from Sketching and Photography to Painting..

These pictures are my first self portraits.. they're watercolor.. like any Art form,
it takes time to develop the technical facility to execute what the mind
intends.. I'm going to use this thread to chronicle my progress..

Here's my first attempt..(last week) it's on 10x14 inch paper..

did a little work on the first one..

did some work on the overall proportions.. still have some things to do before calling this complete.. mainly the eye, the lips and the ear..

it's a pretty noticeable change from this morning though..

    here's today's work on my 1st Portrait..

My mission today was to figure out why my portrait looked so upset and mean..
I found that it had to do with the eyes.. specifically the size and position of the
eye..and also the line between the lips.. so, I completely re-did the eye.. and
corrected some shading mistakes on the lips.. and continued to tweak the
ear.. I didn't have as much time as I would have like to mess around with it today
, but later I plan to get back to it.. and deal with the skin texture..

Here's the progression so far.. from recent to original:

    2nd portrait update..

spent a good couple of hours working on this one.. made some major corrections
to the the entire thing.. I'm learning that I need to spend more time scrutinizing
the sketches before I start painting.. I plan to detail out the hat plus put another darker layer of paint all over..

I think you did an absolutely terrific job! I'm not a pro, i know a really lil bit about techniques, but the progress is obvious and the amazing thing is that it's in such a short period of time. I think you're really talented. Your finished work is more detailed. You added more shading and light and skin structure more depth if I'm not mistaking and the other details that you mentioned yourself are noticeable too. Very nice self portraits!

    latest update

made some alterations to the nose and lip lines.. and chin and trimmed the back
of the hat.. my paper is reaching the end of it's durability.. I should have
done this on a thicker paper.. this was just supposed to be a test sketch.. I didn't
plan to work this paper over so much.. story of my life.. I'll buy a 30 dollar journal,
then write my best stuff on the back of a receipt or a napkin.. must be some
kind of mental block.. anyway.. I still have a couple of things to do with this..
mainly.. moving the zipper on my hat.. and tweaking that troublesome ear..
and I need to spend some time working on clothing.. anyway..

here is the progression again (newest to oldest):

    moham, destee, rich, amnat, purplemoons..

thank you all for the encouraging words and gestures.. for the positive energy..
It really does make a difference.. anyway.. I'm going to keep working at..
see if I can get at some of the things I haven't been able
to express in my music or my writing.. can't wait to see what I can make it do..

    Peace.. and thanks again.
