    it's early sunday
well before the morning's first light
there are no dreams from my thoughts
sleep is as distant as the moon
yet here you and i are
thriving in a violent free world
    when you look at me

    my blood turns to ink
my mind fills with extravagant images
    that pour verse after verse
from every orifice and pore of me

    palms up to the sky
    reaching towards the sun's arrival
    haiku streams from my eyes
i glance at my legs, feet, arms and hands
and realize my flesh is made of poetry

    then i notice my reflection
in the poems pooling around me
    and for the first time
i say to myself, looking at myself
    "Good morning, POET!"

now i can honestly promise you
    before i transcend this body
    and join the ancestors
    to continue my journey
i will leave my work behind
for you to hold in your hands
    evidence of my final truth:

    this woman was a poet
    and her words live on
