Obama Oil Drilling Plan: East Coast, Alaska Waters Could Open For Drilling

    Huffington Post/AP First Posted: 03-31-10 12:14 AM | Updated: 03-31-10 11:50 AM

WASHINGTON -- In a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling, President Barack Obama plans to allow oil drilling 50 miles off of Virginia and is considering opening up significant additional stretches along the Atlantic and Alaskan coasts.

Obama's plan will cover a lot of ground -- and water -- offering few concessions to environmentalists, who have been strident in their opposition to more oil platforms off the nation's shores. Hinted at for months, the move would modify a ban that has limited coastal drilling outside the Gulf of Mexico for more than 20 years.

The Los Angeles Times, citing administration officials, summed up the four biggest elements of the plan:

Eventually open two-thirds of the eastern Gulf's oil and gas resources for drilling.
Proceed with drilling off Virginia, provided the project clears environmental and military reviews.
Study the viability of drilling off the mid- and southern Atlantic coasts.
Study the viability of drilling in Alaska's Beaufort and Chukchi seas -- areas hotly defended by environmentalists -- but issue no new drilling leases in either sea before 2013.

the war in Iraq and Afghanistan are waged for oil and prices have still gone up.

The first cars were electric and the oil companies lobbied to never let the eletric cars recently built to see the light of day.

There is a reason people aren't buying hybrids like crazy. The technology is still new and they are more pricey then their gas counterparts. They had a "Buy a hybrid and get a Tax Credit of Up to $3,4000 and only 2 percent of people signed up! Why haven't Americans rushed to the dealer showrooms to fully embrace hybrids? Well, because, unlike many of our politicians, they find that the potential glory of their peers lauding them as "green" doesn't shut down the math part of their brains. Lets take the Altima hybrid as an example. Sure it is more fuel efficient than the gas verison but it also costs a lot more. With gas prices just under two dollars a gallon, you would have to drive the Altima hybrid over 350,000 miles just to make your money back. Even with gas at its peak of $4.11 a gallon, you'd still have to drive the hybrid 159,000 miles to break even. Also it gets worse. That information was from the Associated Press on January 11, 2009 with the article titled: "48 MPG is nice but hybrids don't add up right now." They also said this: "Driving 15,000 miles a year with a commute that keeps you on the freeway, you'd have to drive the car until 2057 to save enough to gas to make the hybrid cost-effective, even at...record gas prices." So, it doesn't take a moron(Saying a lot since this is the AP.) to figure out gas is more efficient.

The government should be getting out of the oil business and stop subsdizing them. If they oil companies want to buy land to drilll then let them drill. The government shouldn't have power over them just by leverging the granting of rights of drilling over their heads.

It is not so much the concept of the drilling as much as the devestation it causes to those who live adjacent to the are drilled,
during offshore, moreso then inland drilling, but your point regarding government bailouts is more then accurateand on point, and even moreso in regards to the gov. billions allocated for nuclear plants.
