    What is true religion?

I ponder this question and wonder could anyone answer this without being judgmental or fanatic.
I am open and willing to listen.

I think about it like this..

Religion is just an attempt to codify a way of living. for example.. if you were to write down all of the lessons you have learned in your life and state them in terms of principles.. and create stories that utilize those principles.. and create rituals and procedures that instill the values contained in those principles in the uninitiated.. what you would have would be similar to a religion.. throw a creation theory in there.. and you have the makings of a religion. You just need people now to take those ideas and apply them to their lives.. you can call it Blazejayism.

Religion works by exploiting human fears or phobias and the promise of rewards if you live your life according to the dogmas set by the religious caste. That's what they all have in common.

Mr. Neely Fuller Jr says that racism white supremacy is the most powerful religion known to man.

He says there is no greater collective effort, yielding the desired results of the participants, as white supremacy.

Given that, i'd venture to say that religion could be considered a collective effort to yield desired results.

Here's a discussion i started on it years ago : The Most Powerful Religion - White Supremacy

I once caught a little bit of a Joseph Campbell documentary on PBS, and though I wasn't able to watch all of it, I've always remembered something he said about religion:

Re-ligio. [Re-] means 'back or backward' and [-ligio] means 'to link'. Thus, Campbell said that religion means *to link back*.

if the linking back is to something essential.. what's the problem?

No problem that I know of, offhand, unless such linking back, and then action taking towards others causes offense or harm to others who don't feel the same about that kind of linking back at all.

I didn't get to see all of that program, so I don't know if/how Campbell dealt with concepts like rightness, morality, guidance, or what have you. I only know (for myself) that because that's all I heard him say in that program, that I don't auto-associate a spiritual sensibility or a spiritual component to his definition for religion (though he may well have discussed it that way).

Instead, that definition makes me think of religion in terms of words like tradition, heritage, and even legacy.
