from A Tarheel Poet’s master series

Daddy just up and left me
    turned his back and ran

Daddy just up and left me
    hardened crust in my hand

Daddy just up and left me
    I could barely stand

Daddy just up and left me
now expects me to be a man

    with no direction,
    no signs of hope,
    ghastly dreams echo
    my women raped
    iron cast chains,
    and bloody ropes

    my forefather…this country caged
my grandfather….worked, bleeding his hands to the bone
my father….this country unleashed his rage
    me….I’m left here all alone

    unsure, unguided
    my fate decided
one second before the first slave ship arrived
dropped human cargo on these shores
    400 yrs of solitude
    of boarded windows
    barricaded doors
    they took our wives
    as sun-burnt whores
stripping us of the one thing that brought us comfort

well, at least that was then….

see, for years they failed to recognize
that even with their ******** lies,
we’ve never bought into the guise
of the superior value of their lives
no matter what, even when internally we fight,
    we’ll always easily unite,
    out of common understanding
    common pain
    we’ve seen the struggle
    felt the strain
that tries to tear the bonds we share…
    the degradation of segregation…
    and for those of you
    who were there,
    I say thank you,
    for my generation,
    you, the catalyst
    that caused unifying reaction
building up towers that still refuse to fall
    to their great dissatisfaction

    I can imagine it
    your ears straining hard
to hear a future with freedom truly
    ringing

    through all the adversity,
    the attacks, cold stares,
    you joined hands
    and kept on singing….

fire rain down, o’er my soul
    going down to Canaan
    and freedom land

fire rain down, o’er my soul
    gonna get some redemption
    if I can

fire rain down, o’er my soul
    cleanse me free
    of the sordid land

fire rain down, o’er my soul
Lord, take me by the hand

    so now I’m here…
contemplating, but the time is now,
    no more waiting,
    I’m done explaining
    through debating
the time is now for reinstating
    black kings and queens
    to their original thrones
we may not be indigenous here
but it is OUR home, too…
    and it’s time you realized

Daddy just up and left me
    cause he couldn’t comprehend

Daddy just up and left me
tried to wash his hands of his sin

Daddy just up and left me
    wanted me to break….but I wouldn’t bend

Daddy just up and left me
but I’ll be just fine, in the end

    America….the Beautiful?

    Tell it.....Tell it......tell it!!!

and imagine where that leaves our sons

You're not in this struggle alone brotha man
i felt the pain, anguish, anger and confusion of this piece.
