    Reflection

The reflection in the mirror scares me, and makes me begin to self-hate.

Has me having flash backs of your life, our struggle, and ur drug habit to date.

People constantly rantin "girl you look like your mama"

Over time I got to think I’d inherit all her drama.

See in my mind her lips on the pipe were equivalent to the substance entering my body

That were killing my organs… taking my freedom…holding me captive to her addiction.

And as that reflection stares back at me a tear rolls down my face

It had me hoping, wishin, praying that God will allow me to live and take me away from this place…

That place where kids make fun of the clothes you own…

Where you worry about when you leave school if you’ll even have a home.

That place…where men steal your innocence, and God doesn’t seem real.

And suicide seems like the only way…to get away...from the pain that you feel.

This reflection is embedded into my memory…

So when I see her…I saw me

I saw our hands clapping, our feet stomping, and our voice lifting praising God on Sunday.

Then I saw us turn around & give the dope man our rent money on Monday.

I saw us (you and me) selling our bodies for one more hit...

Then after that one hit lying to God swearing you would be through with it.

I saw us moving from place to place, sharing an empty one bedroom apartment

Where rats and roaches shared the space…

This reflection still haunts me… every night of every day …

    Even after seven years…

Has me working two jobs going to school full time…

so that I won’t repeat her steps in anyway…

That reflection has me in self-doubt convincing me that I’ll be anything but myself…

    But that I’d be you..

That I’d have a daughter one day that is afraid of her own reflection...

    And hate me too..

Because she is afraid to be like me…

Like I am afraid to be like you…

I would give my all to be rid of this reflection….

    That you gave me…

I hate it…I hate you. I hate me. I hate us.

I hate the way you took my life…

I hate that I never came before your homemade wire pipe.

I hate myself for always loving you knowing that we’ll always have this connection….

    And having this reflection..

    That’s tearing me apart because I’m afraid…

Afraid to be exactly what I see …

When I look in the mirror at me…

    Her

This heartrending poem is full of emotion. Pain accompanied by fear conspire to create an empty soul. Fill-up your heart and soul with love and faith, love, that so many like me and you need; faith, which saves us all. :flowers:

    Hi Msgenevac
Allow me to say , welcome, welcome, welcome ...while I collect my thoughts...whew...what a way to walk in...
tight piece poet, and know that this one tore at my heartstrings, not just for you, but also for the "future" you's that you see, for the past "Inner" you that you wasn't allowed to see. The Inner beauty that awaits you. Here's a little secret:
~The mirror allows you the opportunity to see whatever it is you want it to reflect back to you~

This is an awesome piece, and it had to be someone awesome behind it.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I've always loved this site, and one day I sat down and wrote that poem and decided to share it. I'll be blessing this site with more of my art as time passes.

Seems like the reflection of the mother is seen, true, but also a reflection of what you want the future to be, and that's a positive reflection. Powerful piece poet. Welcome, welcome within.
