Define successful?

To me they succeeded in breaking the mental chains and fighting back against their oppressors as well as setting a precedent for future generations. The succeeded in not only scaring the hell out of white people, but kikling some too.

U seem hell bent on using the term unsuccessful and attaching it to some i ur black heroes to diminish them?

Why the resistance to blacks taking PRIDE in a black slave rebellion on U.S. soil where blacks gained their freedom on the battlefield?

Oh, and I assure you, I am well aware of John Horse (whom I've already referenced) as well as the 2nd Seminole War, fought over a black woman. I take pride in not only my racial heritage, but my tribal (African-American) heritage as well.

To the contrary. You seem hell bent with dogs nipping at your heels on denying TRUE BLACK success - FREEDOM won the battlefield by the Black Seminoles.

I do not define "success" in slave era as killing a couple white people, then being hung by the neck until dead, as well as (in the case of Nat Turner) hundreds of blacks who didn't take part in the FAILED rebellion being murdered as well. ALL the Black Seminoles were granted their freedom from slavery and NONE was hung. None of the Florida slaves who fought white soldiers on the battlefield with the Black Seminoles and later surrendered, was killed. Not one.

If you wish to wax raphsodic over brothers, no matter how brave or freedom-loving who lead failed rebellions, that's your perogative. I prefer to push into the forefront those who made a difference.

Like the Black Seminoles you seem to despise.

Although I never accused you of anything (have NO idea where you got that from), thanks for the mention of the obvious: The 2nd Seminole War is the war that the U.S. NEVER wants to talk about.

And from the brickbats to my even mentioning their name on this thread, the U.S. ain't the "only" one who does not EVER want to talk about it.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

Which stories about our ancestors and us do you think will be displayed at the new NMAAHC? Will it reveal stories like the one Kadijah mentioned about the Black Seminoles or will it be the same ones that America is comfortable talking about?

I believe this Museum is scheduled to open in 2015. I received a fundraising letter in the mail and some of it goes like this...

"Of course, the Museum will have major exhibitions on slavery, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement, and also will commemorate history-making events such as the election of America's first black president.

In addition, you will learn about African American pioneers in so many fields -- from renowned inventor George Washington Carver to crusading journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett. You will experience the richness and diversity of contemporary African American history and culture by gaining fresh insights on great achievers in fields as diverse as science, sports, education, music, government, social policy and more.

But telling the story of how African Americans made our nation what it is today requires much more.

We want to break new ground -- unearthing forgotten (what about never revealed?) aspects of history and bringing stories to life that have never been adequately told. (wonder what stories those would be? keep reading...) Your bookmarks (sent free) provide a glimpse of the remarkable stories our Museum will tell.
