~Conversation with my Grandmother~
Motherdear placed her hand upon my left breast to feel my heart
said she can read them
said this was too important,
and though she believed I would
never lie to grandmother ~
she wanted to know for herself
Motherdear told me there's a way to tell the difference between the truth and falsehood
said the heart don't lie about nothin
not like the tongue ~ said the mind
controls that tongue but can't nothin
bridle the heart
said it's all in the beats and the rhythm
the pounding of the heart reveals the
truth about a matter
Motherdear said God gave her inner visions as her eyes began to fail
said long life helped her perfect the gift
said she don't even hear the same, either ~
words don't mean as much as the joy or pain
or the warmth or chill in the tone of a voice
Motherdear said even a smiling face don't always mean "happy"
said we are a PEOPLE accustomed to wearing
masks for just about every occasion
So she placed her small, wrinkled hand, soft like fine leather, upon my left breast
and began to read
