Reading The 'Black' On White Pages

    See
    Cos' they didn't give me
    No black history books
    But I know
    That slaves
    Didn't just learn
    How to read
    And write
    Without first, risking
    Their 'worthless' lives

    But
    I could still see
    The tall, dark, shadow
    Of 'black'
    Somewhere
    Between the lines
    As I read
    On white pages

    And
    I didn't know
    That having
    White
    Insight
    Would lead to my
    Discovery

    I read
    Hemingway,
    Dickens and Shakespeare
    Because I wanted
    To pass the course
    Of white lies

    But
    When Hemingway failed me
    And I realised
That the Bell didn't 'Toll' for me

    And
    Simultaneously

    Othello married that white woman

    That's when I knew
    That I was missing
    From the story

    And so
    I searched
    The white pages
    Again

    To try and find myself

    And I found myself
    Too

    On page 34
Or on some other significant number

I was sitting on top of verbs
    And so I viewed
    The action words
    As a sign

    And now I
    Design
    My own story lines

    Because

    I read

    The

    'Black'

    On

    White pages

    Sistah Deep

What a unique angle on the deceptive history of America.
I have always felt very strongly about how history is being presented in our school. No wonder most whites do not understand the inner pain that most blacks in America inherently carry...the painful acts and the benefits of slavery for the advancement of America are written with faded ink. We are seen as whiners and this deeply distrubs me to no end.

Thank you Hunter for sharing this precious jewel from your poetry box.

I Invite To Read This Poem...On A Different Angle, But Same Subject
