Black in my Mind
Occupation
Full Time Working On Self
(Written for Spirit Mother Fola, who was told in the early 1970's by a woman who paid her fare to America, she was too RAW to be seen in the house around her guests)

RAW
Real
African
Woman
Something to be said
About a tight thick course
Head of hair
Makes others stare
Wanna press and perm it
Instead of just acknowledging it
For what it is
RAW
Real African Woman
Others say with dismay
She is misplaced
But her spirit is one of a Queen
One of ancestral grace
The standard of what it is
Beautiful to be Black
And know it
Couldn't stand the face
That your eyes showed this
Raw
Real African Woman
Her indigenous tongue
Sung words so thick
You chose to say speak English
Because you couldn't understand it
Not that you chose
To dispose or understand
That British, Protugese and Frenchmen
Still can't kill a language
God devined in his image
Turn your nose up
When you don't know what to do
When RAW folx don't choose
To look like you
To talk like you
Don't say we don't like your ways
Just say we love our own
The way we praise spiritual wisdom
Know who and where we belong
Don't say we are disrespectful
Because we won't go, say, do
What you want us to
Don't say we should gaze at your ways as perffect
As to be amazed of how perfectly wrong we are
For we come from far off starred Heavens
Where anstrel sistren and brethren
Are strong and wise
Don't be surprise
That I may even try to assimilate as to accomodate
Or demonstrate my DIVERSITY
It's only that I may recreate myself when need be
But please
It's not to appease you
It's because of what you already knew
I am RAW
Righting America's Wrongs
I am RAW
Resisting American Ways
I am RAW
Retrieving Ancestral Wisdom
I am RAW
Rich Above Wealth
I AM RAW
Real African Woman

indeed u r whom u r
a real woman a lovin star
some may glar
wonder & stare
da rawness of ya ware
but a Queen
raw & bling bling!!
indeed u r whom u be
it's all love 4 many to see
say it loud .......................
