What's the most common reason people give when asked why they want to be a police officer? Is there a certain personality-type that lean toward this profession as opposed to less risky jobs? Do some people have greater tendencies for doing things that give them an adrenaline rush? What do you think when some clinical psychologist say that there is a fine line between a police and criminals, they just chose different careers?

Very good question NNQ and most answers from recruits are some of the biggest lies known to modern man. Back in the day it was briefly touched on in the academy just to make fun of the goofballs who'd pipe up and say I want to make a difference or I want to stop crime by which the instructor would say and when you make a difference and stop crime where are you and the rest of us cops going to work since because of you every police department in America will cease to exist because there will be no crime for us to fight? Those were the mugs who wound up sitting by themselves in the cafeteria during lunch break. When Civil Service protection meant something a recruit could pretty much give any reason without being removed from consideration for recruit training, well except his desire to assassinate the president or the instructor who asked the question. There were no orals like there are today. I've heard oral reviews are the most stressful part of the vetting process to become a highly paid armed secretary. More so then the poly which a psych major or a sociopath could ace. Most State Police oral supervisors are using portable stress analyzers during orals so one should never lie or boast because the wrong answer will get you bounced. Now that you passed the only test that does not discriminate due to color, race or religion "The Civil Service" scoring exam, usually the orals will be the first of many phases of your police career where nepotism, favoritism, gender, race or other special interest factors comes to play.

Sometimes no matter how difficult the vetting process goes, one always slips through.
