Jazz and Blues Music...

All genres of American Black music can be traced back to some sort of Religious origin. Even the Secular music produced by Blacks has Sacred roots. We can even trace elements certain genres directly back to Africa. The fact that many of our ancestors were Muslim can also be discovered in early Black American music. The element of distinctive rhythm has always had a significant place in our musical culture.

The nature of our sojourn in America has deeply affected our musical expression. The trial of our experience has put us on the cutting edge of thought and introspection. This is one reason why the entire planet follows the Black man in musical expression. In today’s music world, the ability to sound “Black” is an almost instant ticket to success for many non-Black artists. There is something about this experience of being kidnapped, bound and made slaves for 400 plus years that has profoundly affected and continues to affect our musical as well as cultural expression. The power of this Music affected the Civil rights movement of the Sixties. The Civil Rights movement also affected Music. We can tell much about the mindset of this society by analyzing the Music.

Before Jazz and blues in America, there was field music. Field music or picking cotton music is what African slaves sung while working slaving for white people.

Black people can makeing pure music out of anything...

Washboard story and tutorial

Original washboards were invented by black people to wash white folks closthes with, then black people saw that they could make music with the washboard and that is when they began to use it as an instrument. Like everything else, black folks put down the washboard and white folks picked it up. It's rare these days to see a black person playing washboard but plenty of white folks is playin it.

Excellent post, Sister A4U! :terrific:

I love African American history! :toast:

A further confession is: My name is CherryBlossom and I am a PBS JUNKIE! (lol)

And through this addiction, I learned of the 1st collection of Slave Songs, published in 1867....It was on a show called "The History Detectives;" and a Black man had this book, part of a massive estate of African American historical artifacts left to him by his mother.

HERE is a video of the episode

Here is the book:

Slave Songs Of The United States (pub. 1867)
