she lays on a wooden bed - sheet thrown to the floor
nightshirt on and nothing more,
knees closed into her chest -
head between them does rest,
sweat beads dripping down her neck
hair tangled from long neglect...
doesn't seem to recognize me
as I enter the scene,
I can hear throughout the silence
the sobs resulting from violence
my eyes fall upon her calves
which bear welts, and a long gash
across her thigh...
I wonder why
it took so long for me to realize -
her shoulder bruised,
she seemed confused
and mumbling to herself
I laid a hand upon her gently as I offered my help...
that's when she Screamed and made me gasp so hard I took a step back
she turned her cold, translucent eyes to mine
and stared through my mind
"just tell me why you did this to me..." came out a whisper, full of fear
I was so frightened I replied not as though I didn't hear
"I...", trailing off into the breeze
her icy stare made me freeze
I couldn't speak, I couldn't breathe
trying to grasp all these things...
what had possessed me to maim this poor child of whom I had birthed?
why did I constantly degrade her self-esteem and her worth?
that's when I realized the metaphor behind all these words, unmasked the face
She is the Mother of the Earth, and I the Human Race
I am injustices inflicted on our brothers
She is the Mother
Looking on in anguish dread
allowing us to make our bed
like an Innocent child, it seems
I interpreted this from my dreams
She is the Bounty of Creation
We are a wasteful, cruel Nation
Yet she still waits for us to change our ways
For She epitomizes grace
OPEN YOUR EYES
ALL WHO CAN SEE
OPEN YOUR EYES
AND FOLLOW ME
it took a poem just for you to see
OUR HUGE RESPONSIBILITY
OPEN YOUR EYES
and come with me
let us fulfll prophecy...
