Pound By Pound: On The Disappearance Of Karen Carpenter

Back then

I was at the top
Of the fifth grade
And you sang
"I'm On Top Of The World"

Was it that
One extra note
That killed you
Or did the lyrics
Finally weigh you down

And
If only I knew
Back then
What I have come
To know now

I would have
Saved up my
One dollar a week
Allowance
To buy your sheet music
Instead of
Comic book strips
And bubblegum
And demand
That the quarter notes
Lead me to you
To the place
Of your anorexic
Burial grounds

Then
I would have stood
On the spot
Where life first
Deceived you
And stole your melody
Pound by pound
And tell you
That you were television
A black-haired
Musical vision
To behold

But ten year olds
Grow old
And the sounds of music
Move through time

Now
I can't even remember
That last time

Karen

The last time
Radio days
Hummed your love notes

But that little girl
In the fifth grade
Remembers

Karen

Remembers
That you were
On top of the world

And how
Anorexia Nervosa
Buried you
And swallowed you whole

Inside the song

I remember

hearing of her death and sitting in disbelief. She was one of my sheroes in music...not only a most melodic alto/tenor and gifted drummer...she was a wonderful lyricist ~

Beautiful beautiful tribute to the woman who broke my heart when she said "goodbye to love". We did care if she lived or died.

Thank you Hunter.
