Son, I can’t tell you how to be a man
It’s a complicated thing
Sometime I don’t quite understand
And even though you’re only two
Here is what I vow to do

As you grow up I’ll be an example
Of all I think is good and right
You’ll know who I am
I’ll be the one who tucks you in at night

I’ll work to provide a home for you
Be supportive in all you do
Be the man that you look up to
You’ll never have a problem
I won’t help you get through

You’ll watch me treat your mother with kindness
You’ll see that strength truly comes from the heart
I’ll teach you how to never, ever give up
You’ll learn how success is set up from the start

You’ll learn that respecting others is key
Self- respect you’ll learn from me
You can cry whenever you want, I won’t mind
Soft is a feather
Not a man who is kind

And when that special girl comes along
I’ll teach you how to sing a love song
Teach you how to treat a lady
So much of life you must quickly learn
I’ll talk to you about the fire
That within you will burn

When you are right never back down
Admit when you are wrong
Do so without a frown
I love you son
I’ll do whatever I can
To help you grow
Into a wise and proud Black Man
