TheGarima Gospels are believed to be "the world’s earliest illustrated Christian manuscript" and the oldest surviving Ethiopian manuscript of any kind.[1][2]

The Gospels are housed in Ethiopia's Abba Garima Monastery. They have never left the monastery.[1] Although the Gospels were in the catalog of an American museum exhibition that toured from 1993-96, African Zion: the Sacred Art of Ethiopia, they were never lent to the exhibition.[1] Long thought to date from c. 1100, 2010 radiocarbon dating conducted at Oxford University under the auspices of the Ethiopian Heritage Foundation suggests they actually date from the period between 330 and 650.[1]

Monastic tradition ascribes the gospels to Saint Abba Garima, said to have arrived in Ethiopia in 494.[1] Abba Garima is one of the Nine Saints instrumental in evangelizing the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Axum and the monks regard the Gospels less as significant antiquities than as sacred relics of Abba Garima.[1] According to tradition version, Abba Garima wrote and illustrated the complete Gospels in a single day; God stopped the sun from setting until the Saint completed his work.[2] The new radiocarbon date supports this oral tradition.

Ge'ez (ግዕዝ Gəʿəz), also called Ethiopic, is an abugida script that was originally developed (as an abjad) to write Ge'ez, now the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In modern communities that use it, such as the Amharic and Tigrinya, the script is called fidäl (ፊደል), which means "script" or "alphabet".

The Book of Enoch (also 1 Enoch[1]) is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. It is not currently regarded as part of the Canon of Scripture as used by Jews, apart from the Beta Israel canon; nor by any Christian group, apart from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church canon.

Western scholars currently assert that its older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) date from about 300 BC and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably was composed at the end of the 1st century BC.[2] However, Ethiopian scholars generally hold that Ge'ez is the language of the original from which the Greek and Aramaic copies were made, pointing out that it is the only language in which the complete text has yet been found.

It is wholly extant only in the Ge'ez language, with Aramaic fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls and a few Greek and Latin fragments.

    The Ancient "Holy Land"

Dʿmt (ESA: ) was a kingdom located in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia that existed during the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Few inscriptions by or about this kingdom exist, as very little archaeological work has taken place. As a result, it is not known whether Dʿmt ended as a civilization before Aksum's early stages, evolved into the Aksumite state, or was one of the smaller states united in the Aksumite kingdom possibly around the beginning of the Common Era.

The Book of Jubilees (Hebrew: ספר היובלים Sefer haYovelim), sometimes called the Lesser Genesis (Leptogenesis), is an ancient Jewish religious work, considered one of the Pseudepigrapha by most Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant Christians. It was well known to Early Christian writers in the East and the West. Later it was so thoroughly suppressed that no complete Hebrew, Greek or Latin version has survived. It is considered canonical for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, where it is known as the Book of Division (Ge'ez: Mets'hafe Kufale). In the modern scholarly view, it reworks material found in the biblical books of Genesis and Exodus in the light of concerns of some 2nd century BC Jews.
