    Peaches

    I smelled them
    that fresh sweet aroma
    snapped me out of my
    waking coma
    elicited an uncontrollable smile
Gave me the shivers, as a joyous, giddy chill
    rushed through me
    I stood still
for what seemed like only a moment
and allowed childhood memories to flow at will

    Ripping and running
    in the blazing sun
    Me and my brother
    having silly, carefree fun
    Back from the produce stand
    here comes dad
Flew upstairs to see what kind
    of fruit he had
    Peaches!
Couldn't wait to sink my teeth into one
juice running all down my chin
craving another before I was even done
    So sweet tangy and luscious
the pit appeared all too soon
    Had to have yet another
Guess that's 3 so far this afternoon
    But, who's counting?
Sounds like rope hitting the cement outside...

Licking peach juice from my fingers
I slowly walked down the first flight
but bolted down the second set of stairs
Yep, they were jumping double dutch alright
I wasn't good at jumping double dutch
but I could turn the rope okay
To a syncopated beat, the rope swung under her feet
We counted to 30, before she stepped on the rope today
Wish I could jump like that...
Let's play hide and go seek
    You're it!
    And don't peek!
Why I always have to be it?
I ran to find a good place to hide
Skinned my knee...again... If I go in now,
I hope Mom will let me go back outside

    Hobbled upstairs as my mother
bandaged me up from yet another fall
    It's dinner time, girl
    didn't you hear me call?
Took extra effort to wash my hands
dirt didn't want to turn loose
what with the jump rope grime and sweat
    clinging to that peach juice
Smothered chicken melted in my mouth
loved that buttery spinach, the meal wasn't complete
though, until I had another one of those
    delicious peaches to eat
    Ummmm...Mom, can I?
Yes, you can go back outside for a little while
My mother looked at me with a sigh,
    then that familiar, amused smile

The air was less heavy, it was almost dark
    daggone mosquitoes began to bite
Those lightening bugs turned their lanterns off
and on, they looked so pretty at night
We stood around, singing Motown songs
    Harmonizing best we could
None of us really knew all the lyrics
But all in all we sounded pretty good
Here come those streetlights, had to come inside
Time for one more peach before bed
Don't you just hate it when your mouth misses
the peach, and you bite some of the napkin instead?
I made sure my last bite
    was totally peachy
    and said, Good night

I laid there, eyes getting heavy
    from the window fan's drone
    Looking at the flickering shadows
interrupting the way the moon shone
    I faintly overheard a conversation
about how many peaches I ate
Couldn't make out what else was said
    It was getting awfully late
as I heard my parents laugh
I smiled, and drifted off to sleep.

    Quite a surprise
    that an aroma could evoke
    such a pleasant memory
    Sometimes life gives you
    a hug, unexpectedly
    when you truly need one
    Oh, how I loved those
    Peaches

Well So'ja, if you brought over some grapes and added them to the peaches, that would be the beginnings of a nice fruit salad, lol. Much appreciated, thank you.
So, you loved peaches also, Rich? A peach pie sounds yummy, see, now you've got me QQn for that. Thank you so much.

this actually took me to memories of my grandad's farm in VA. just the smell of fresh peaches alone does that to me.
