Black People : PBS host Smiley calls meeting to urge black agenda

Tavis is just trying to get attention for more book deals. His platform always remains the same. Black Think TALK sponsored by WHITE monopoly-finance capital. Tavis talks about holding Obama "accountable" but what about himself? How much progress has been made on Tavis's own "Covenent" which pre-dates Obama's election?

Oh wow! I just noticed. Tavis wants to hold Obama accountable for "our agenda" while at the same time attempting to hold a forum to "urge a black agenda" so how can he hold Obama accountable for an agenda that does not exist?

What happened to the so-called "Black Agenda" anyway? Are we holding Karenga and others "accountable"?

PBS host Smiley calls meeting to urge black agenda

By JESSE WASHINGTON (AP) – 2 days ago

Two months after ending his annual State of the Black Union conference, Tavis Smiley is gathering African-American advocates to press the case for a "black agenda."

The decision was motivated by what Smiley called recent statements from some black leaders downplaying the need for President Barack Obama to specifically help African-Americans.

"I was compelled to do it because of this debate," the activist and PBS talk show host said Wednesday.

The panel discussion will be March 20 at Chicago State University. Panelists include advertising pioneer Tom Burrell, professors Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Negotiations to televise the event were in progress.

Some black politicians and activists have recently begun to question Obama's longtime stance that helping the overall economy will improve the fortunes of blacks who are disproportionately poor and unemployed.

West, for example, gave Obama a grade of C minus on policies and priorities focused on poor and working people, saying, "He has really not come through in any substantial and significant way." Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have blocked some legislation until their demands were met.

Last week, Smiley and the Rev. Al Sharpton had a fierce argument about the issue on Sharpton's radio show, with Sharpton taking heated exception to Smiley's claim that the reverend was giving Obama a pass on black issues.

When Smiley ended the State of the Black Union after 10 years, he said black issues were now being addressed elsewhere.

Apparently, however, not enough to his liking.

"This is not about Obama. It's about us," Smiley said in an interview.

He said that the Obama campaign and black leaders asked African-Americans for help during the election, but that "now that he's elected, what are black people being asked to do to hold him accountable to our agenda?"

Eric Deggans, who writes about the media and race for Florida's St. Petersburg Times, said Smiley's new event is consistent with his record of criticizing Obama's race-neutral stance. But there is a perception that Smiley is personally invested in the issue, he said, because Obama declined to attend Smiley's 2008 State of the Black Union event during the presidential campaign.

"It could be hard for people watching this to see Tavis as an honest broker," Deggans said. "He's playing an odd game," he continued. "He's trying to make great television and also present something that effects social change. That's often two different things."

panafrica,

Thanks for bringing us/me into the political loop of what's transpiring with our so-called Black National level Leadership, or the posturing thereof; this had gotten by me. Normally, I don't follow politics, but this involves the Black impetus.

After reading and probing the various sources, links and video's, starting off, here are some point of views that interestingly line up with my personal thoughts, especially on the emptiness, of Tavis Smiley’s' past proposal to our people, Covenant with Black America, which most have forgotten about and make no issue of, although this effort afforded Smiley with Best Selling Author awards and large sums of money.

The Covenant with Black America is a national plan of action to address the primary concerns of African Americans today -- from health to housing, from crime to criminal justice, from education to economic parity.

On the term used by Al Sharpton, “ballyhoo,” a clamorous and vigorous attempt to win customers or advance any cause; blatant advertising or publicity; this fits with the history of entering and keeping the President’s Office, by taking a “race-neutral” stance.

Throwdown: Tavis Smiley & Reverend Al Sharpton
Renee Martin | March 4, 2010

We have a tendency to refer to members of the African Diaspora as a community, despite the fact that it is filled with people that have wildly different perspectives and experiences. Race supposedly unites all Blacks, but the hierarchy within the so-called community means that there will always be some voices that are louder than others.

Sharpton and Tavis are dependent upon the dissatisfaction of the Black community in order to earn a living. Not only did Tavis support Hillary Clinton during the election, he rejected the appearance of Michelle Obama at his Negro Super Bowl (read: State of the Black Union), when Obama was unable to attend due to previous commitments.

After cancelling the State of the Black union in the wake of a scandal regarding funding, Tavis realized that he had given up his best opportunity for self promotion and re-organized the Negro Super Bowl at the end of March giving little warning to the Black Popes (read: intelligentsia) regarding a date.

Such is the arrogance of Smiley, that he expected all would be participants to rearrange their schedule in order to grace the hallowed stage of The State of the Black Union. As always, Tavis is not allowing any previous commitment to be offered as an excuse for an inability to attend.

We will always need people to speak out against racism, but we should always bear in mind that no matter how brilliant or committed a person is, there will always be an aspect of arrogance and power-seeking in their work. Such is human nature, particularly in a society so dedicated to hierarchy.

On that score, Martin and Malcolm have established themselves as two sides of the same coin and though their tactics couldn’t have been more different, they both wanted the same objective: freedom for Black people.
Once you’ve seen the real thing in action, how the hell are you going to settle for the clown act of Tavis Smiley and Al Sharpton? That’s like trading in Miles Davis for ‘Lil Wayne. That’s also why the recent *****-slap between the two race hustlers is something I don’t take seriously.

I like Tavis, and I like his State of the Black Union. Wasn't Elder Sister Hare on that, she is fire (check what the Sister wrote with her man, a book called "Crisis in Black Sexual Politics - real ill, real relevant).

Am I wrong for liking Brother Tavis? Just asking, because I don't live in the States and a lot of his information is not known to me.

I agree.

i think he has another agenda. I like Tavis and etc. but, I think he's blaming President Obama however, he needs to look at himself first.

They supported Obama now, they want to blame him for issues that they should have realized before today. If they are not careful, they will be doing the white man's dirty work in blaming President Obama for things that occurred long before this term.

They need to look at the bigger picture if they want to have Black Unity.
