    our late late nights
    by romus simpson

    our late late nights
great vacant avenues flushed of sound
lovers in each vacant light drifting errorless gone
then gone in the dark small infinity of cyclone shadow
voice & relative light gone distilled & dispersed
ocean night & the fretting faceless palms
laid back into each other after war
arms aflail drunk shirtless islanders with stars profane with stars
high in their privacy above the bronze streetlights
gone into high opaque space night
& the stealth water dark silver glass
a growing pan of small stars & ink come everywhere
    our nights, love
    our late nights

the synclavier drift of night strews skyscrapers
that piston & rotate the turning night
that stir night to a glossy even skin
& there an errant occasional lit window blinks looks out into night
intermittent & aspirate as negro faces at the fair come distinct
kin & unkin seeking me in the welling shifting crowds
those floating luminous windows those ghost faces
40 stories up in the mirror & copper buildings beyond reflections
fall down the night searching for love & solace
slow tongue in your smile touches every lit window
& me slightly electric & very easy with you
candlelight windows dawning in the windshield like hundreds
of small dusks making small fires on our slow car & your hair
in beautiful stride my heart rises
small frenzy of fire on my dark shoulders
    my elegant shoulders

then fire vanishes like closing eyes
i watch you watch 3 am come vague blusterous 3 am & change
the shore from indefinite blue to an indigo tropical terrace
& i still slow from the smoke & jazz & the small fires searing each cell
come to gain reference in deference to your breasts & thighs
we riff across the empty city
    night your dress losing blues
    perfumed planets
moonswirl & my free satisfied heart
    i want u i want u

    beautiful lady
    we are so late
having seen the city close &
pull the iron gates clacking shut
no more anything anywhere tonight out here
neons shower no man wherever they bleat
obligated & sleepy in case someone comes crying
    at the lights half clothed
    just us love
someone late like us without sound

    but slowly
like how the shore shifts centuries of sand
roman numerals rising from the placid moon marbled water
    or a resolute crescent wave
sets sail for the calico port of catalina
    with its absolute embrace
not going far but slowly by night by the radio sea
like breath before the saxophone etches into sound
exhales sound like starling like wading through tears
then the shimmering ocean everywhere humbled
i want to grow from your kiss like sound
rise in the cordial bloom of it
    become night sky everywhere
first my young ear then if the god allows me speak
    & a dark hand…..

    this is night music....
and the inspiration from whence this beautiful composition arose, is awe inspiring....

each of your poems is like an exciting new story
and i envision it like a classic film...
one moment black and white, the next, color...
    always graphic and wide screen.
    thank you.
