on our 6th anniversary

it was nothing i have said
or have done
not a fine point of diplomacy missed the ritual banter
or the gulf between the cultures we merged in matrimony
not the shape of my thighs
the casual invitation of my belly
or the midnights your skin sang calypso
& you could not turn into me because some
woman downtown refused you
not the long november with its mathematics of falling leaves &
hemispheres of late stars & the hunger between them
& the earth

not the talk left on the table & in the halls
& the rooms flowering beautiful cordial shadows
indifferent morning rising in the storm everywhere
nor the silence where the seed heart floats in a dark current
away from birth & possibility
that makes me remember my parents
makes me watch you asleep alone & unclaimed
in a tropical dark blue continent sailing
lost in some other sistuh’s lush dream eye
who bears you children & sends them running to greet you
like my father who became immaculate
in being a machine at goodyear & moved each day
click by click tire by tire alarm by alarm toward a great tolling death
ahem by ahem until the lungs were a thick dry tongue
& left unkissed into the wide cold morning eternity

it was not the highlights in my hair
changing evening in my eyes
uncounted & not alive
rain from my sky & eyes on easter island
tongue touch to no one
the world a placid soundless ocean
& no map to find me in all this blue

& it is not
the uncertainty of the mornings
when you walk out the door unasked
& you become my neighbor who works all week
then fishes on weekends & sleeps early
& i become his wife who has come to love her garden
because her home does not grow
