    ====================

    “Ole Soul (Brotha)”

    Picture slick, brown leather, aged in perfection.
    Experiences worn through the Watts riots and the Jim Crow election;
    No… You mean Jim Crow wasn’t elected?
    Yet you can still feel the wrinkles of the laws and flaws in its timeless presence.

    Picture a faded textured Curtis Mayfield 8-track tape.
    The more it is played, the closer to yourself you would get;
    Egyptian incense burning on Saturday morning over the AM channel blues.
    “Get up boy! ... and make up your bed!”
    And you’re one step ahead, because you’ve picked up on all the clues.

    Imagine John Coltrane’s “Live at the Vanguard” playing in a smoke-filled jazz club;
    Cognac on the rocks while war vets chatter about rumors of more war.
    The poor wanting restitution, their daughters practicing prostitution,
    And the activist formerly known as Malcolm Little has just been assassinated.

    Now picture him -- well beyond his birth year,
    Influenced by his grandfather’s wisdom,
    His mother’s strength and his father’s drive;
    Diving head first, unrehearsed into this world that seems to repeat itself.
    At least to him;
    It’s all old news – He’s seen this oh-so familiar story all before.
    Dreamed these very same dreams before his first breathe;
    Felt the seams of the nightmares before the stitch was completed.
    Living life as a script written and directed by the Almighty;
    Starring yours truly!!
    And the stage lights blast on at full beam!

    But, there’s no one watching.
    No audience, no props;
    No balcony seating, no colored light drops;
    Just he and the director… standing still -- one mic.

    I break the silence;
    “I think I’m ready”
    The director replies, “You think?”
    The lights dim.

    Here I am, writing my visions of old;
    Expressing my feelings of new,
    Walking through my life as a martyr awaiting prophecy;
    Just as the days of Curtis Mayfield as he sang of Jim Crow,
    I’m that ole soul brotha you just meet…
    But already know.
