    Enter the smoke filled room,
    Small round wooden tables
    Surround the carpeted stage
    As candles make for centerpieces;

    On the stage is a long piano,
    Black with a slight shine that
    Reflects a part of the smoky light
    Shining towards the center curtain;

    A young man enters from the center,
    Slender build wearing dark linen slacks
    And a loose fitting silk shirt under his
    jacket with a hat covering his eyes;

    in his hand was his purpose,
    a black trumpet resting comfortably
    on three fingers as the young man
    leans slightly on the end of the piano;

    an older gentleman appears
    finding his seat at the piano
    and awaits his cue from eyes
    that never look up from the floor;

    a slight nod and the pianist begins
    to play remnants of Oscar Peterson
    with hints of Art Tatum smothered
    in layers of Count Basie and Ellington;

    Memphis Slim visited the melody with
    Eddie Thompson playing along but it
    wasn’t until George Gershwin called out
    Thelonius Monk that the trumpet moved;

    I heard Harry James play that night,
    While Dizzy Gillespie horn laughed
    And Louis Armstrong smiled when
    Chet Baker rifted over the melody;

    Sentiments of Coltrane visited his horn
    And Hargrove invited Wynton and
    Branford to play along but it wasn’t
    Until the music slows that I smiled;

    The smoke seemed to grow thicker
    The more the young man played
    And I watched as he let the past
    Orchestrate the direction of his flow;

    And for a moment I had to rub my eyes
    When I thought I saw Miles resurrected
    Sit across from me to listen to the old soul
    Make his horn whine through his sorrows…
