Here’s to the old school
To blue- light basement parties
That long awaited slow dance
Here’s to neatly cut afros
Men unafraid of romance

Here’s to the Background singers
Harmonic voices making the songs so sweet
Here’s to Wrangler and Converse
Bell Bottoms flowing
Chuck Taylor’s on our feet

Here’s to “Old Reliable”
My ’76 Cutlass Supreme
Black power
Back in the day
Much more than today’s dream

Thinking back
Playn’ ball all day long
In the subway station
Singing a doo-wop song
Italian Ices
Malted milk shakes
Now-and-Later
Trying to get a girl
Stuck in the project elevator

Purple haze
Kiss the sky
Getting’ high
Far too many friends have said goodbye

I’m still here
Watching young bloods so cool
A very different kind of brother
Than the ones from the old school
