    3 whole months… free
    & i am as kinky/happy
    as i wanna be…
    anticipating CompleteNappiness
    whole-heartedly…
    like lil’ children sleepless
    on christmas eve…
    …i be
    holding my newfound peace
    of Afro-puffed-centricity… tightly
    like mymensah embracing me
    during melancholy airport
    episodes…
    …smiling while
    answering patiently when
    co-workers/sistahs ask
    what’s come over me…

    what’s come over me?

    it’s no great mystery—
    i’ve just decided to… be
the me… i was born with
    before chemical straightening
    sold me the phucked-up fallacy
    that beauty is dressed in
    barbie-doll-type-tresses…
    …that seeking & accepting
    my Natural blak essence…
    “just ain’t for me”
    ‘cause beauty is buried deep
    in dark&lovely perm boxes &
can only be found if you rockin’
    …that long silky kinda weave
    not these jamaican braid twists
that look as if… they were
taken from the head of an
    afrikan princess… who never
    once thought about relaxing
    her ****…

    soulsistahsherrie told me…
    this Nappy thang wasn’t g’on
be easy/& it ain’t for the weak
    after all…
    there are years&years of mental
    conditioning one must release…
    but here i am—
    3 whole months… free…
    & i am as kinky/in love
as i wanna be… with who
i see… reflected back at me
from the mirror & in the eyes
    of the people i meet…

    so… regardless of what anyone
    else might think…
    my almost-there-nappy-hair
    is truly beautiful to me.

    Queen,

Congrats on your freedom and nappiness!!! You have hit the nail on the head (no pun intended). Doesn't it feel good to be you?! Keep on dropping jewels.

    re: ode to nappiness

i like this and it's true, going natural does require dedication and mental preparation... i haven't decided to do the [email protected] thing yet and i'm not sure if i ever will. but my mom, has been wearing dreads for the past few years and they are beautiful. i know that it took her awhile to get used to the comments and things that people say because they don't fully understand...
