“When I was a girl I had a razor, a shotgun, a fist full of pills, but it was pointless and useless, cuz even death wouldn’t have me
So I endured and I struggled, and I fought with my parents and with boys
I decided I didn’t want to die; I just really wanted to live
And it was then I decided that dead was something I’d never be
    When I was a girl”

    - Blair, “When I Was A Girl”, Jet Black, White Noise

Watching my life filter through the gray haze of the October sky
I am remembering every moment of pain
    I have tasted bitterly
My soul has wished for death on many lonely nights
I have wrapped my arms about myself
Rocking silently in the depths of my agony and insanity
Wishing for a moment of peace
Respite from the constancy of suffering
I have searched for love in the emptiness of the wind
In the winding trails of broken promises
From bloodstained bed sheets to cheeks bruised with
Brutal kisses of fists that once caressed me gently
I have known fear as I have looked into my lover’s eyes
Watch the fury reign a torrent of terror against my brown skin
Breathe frozen in the moment before I met my destiny
Face down and forced to realize that this was not love
I have wept as my heart shattered into pieces
Crushed beneath the scorn and cruelty of men
My eyes robbed of their smiles
    My youthful years diminished
I have known the brink of insanity
Where one prayer stood between me and an untimely suicide
I have slid down the walls of my mind
Fingernails breaking the skin of my scalp
Searching for the answers to the maddening questions racing in my mind
Denial carving my insides to ribbons of uncertainty
Until I am curled into a pathetic fetal position
I have seen my reflection in the mirror
Tears streaming in a river of sorrow
Because I no longer knew myself
I have screamed in self torment
    Clawed at the air
Shunned God for my unanswered prayers
I have sacrificed my body and soul to sacrilege
Desperately wanting to escape this reality
Clinging to life even as I have wished for death
Dear God those nights where I dwelled in the abyss of despair
When it seemed my life was too worthless and ragged to repair
Yes, I have tasted sorrow’s bitter cup
Staining my lips with my own blood and tears
    But my spirit remained unbroken
My soul though scarred still resurrected
    And I have lived
Giving every moment to making the most of this life
Remembering and never forsaking these memories
As I watch the years unfold in my mind’s eye
Filtering through the gray haze of the October sky

“When I was a girl I had a razor, a shotgun, a fist full of pills, but it was pointless and useless, cuz even death wouldn’t have me
So I endured and I struggled, and I fought with my parents and with boys
I decided I didn’t want to die; I just really wanted to live
And it was then I decided that dead was something I’d never be
    When I was a girl”

The beauty of this peace…is its mastery of language by the poetess herself…
And then…the brilliance of the message…the victory in struggle…the ability to overcome…

There is nothing more empowering than words that speak to your soul…awaken your subconscious and leave you gasping for new air and wanting more of the Nile…
    Of which just flowed…

I bow to you…Queen Poetess, your gift “reigns”….

    Peace and Love,
    Sage

The depth of your raw descriptive verse, is something to behold. I was shaking my head in awe throughout this piece. The pain was gripping. Flow on, please....
