I have been very critical of Obama's foreign policy in regards to Africa, so what I have to say us not in his defense.
Obama's foreign policy in regards to Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan is a continuation of Bush era politics and goes back further to the Carter administration, if not earlier.
The US funneled arms to EPLF when the Derge came into power in Ethiopia. After the fall of Mengistu's government support went to Ethiopia and the US has been playing Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan against each other since the fall of Siad Barre in Somalia. Enter the socalled peace keeping missions.
Obama was supported by many in the Eritrean community but fell into disfavor due to his support of Meles in Ethiopia who died a few months ago. He is being pressured by Eritrean opposition groups in the US who allege slave trading conducted by the Eritrean government,
My problem here is that the US has ignored evidence of slavery in Ethiopia dating to the Selassie regime, and under Mubarak in Egypt and several US backed regimes in Sudan, this slavery has flourished and the Sinai has been used as base of operation under US and NATO cover.
Obama is just the latest POTUS to turn a blind eye to this point of contention while expanding the conflict under pretext of warding off the al queda factions which do have some base in Eritrea.
