Msnbc.com’s lead headline reads (in all caps no less) “OBAMA AND CONGRESS HIT ALL-TIME RATINGS LOWS.”
It’s no wonder the caption below it doesn’t read “NO SH*T.” From the mounting criticism due to the debt ceiling chaos, a decaying economy, endless wars and upcoming election, criticism of Barack Obama is at a fever pitch. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll states that since the debt-ceiling disaster and subsequent downgrade of the US credit rating, Prez Obama’s job approval rating has dropped 3 points since July, bringing him down to 44%. The report also says his handling of the economy stands at a low of 37 percent, and only 19 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction marking the lowest point for this president. It gets worse, allegedly, a majority of poll takers (54 percent) think Obama’s facing a longer-term setback from which he may never recover. However in January, just 39 percent came to that conclusion. Pollster Peter D. Hart weighs in on the issue, “When [Obama] addresses the American public, he is going to have one more chance to provide some sense of hope and optimism that he … can provide answers to what is a woeful economy.”
Although the poll indicates, “Obama is no longer the favorite to win re-election,” he’s not the only figure to take a blow. Congress as receives an 82% disapproval rating for their handling of the debt ceiling with most respondents saying they’d vote them all out of a job if they could. Republicans seen as the most culpable behind the S&P downgrade. On the bright-ish side, 42 percent give the president high marks for possessing strong leadership qualities, but that’s a 12-point drop from May (in the days following Osama bin Laden’s death). In addition, 70 percent of respondents still find him likeable and 50 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy.
This news comes as no shock, particularly for the liberal activist group Moveon.org, who are second guessing their support of the president when he “repeated discredited tea party talking points” during the announcement of his decision to overrule the EPA, effectively back down on crucial air regulations. Once staunch advocates, they represent a growing number of supporters who disapprove of Obama’s modus operandi.
