COSBY, OBAMA & A SQUARE DEAL?
BY Andre Austin
God has anointed Barack Obama on a mission to attempt to heal a nation. This is a giant leap towards race relations. If, within a 20 year period of time, we elect another president whose mother and father were African-American we can dismiss notions that this era was not a fluke. We also hope their was no Eurocentric viewpoint of Obama trusting him proportionately to the white blood in his DNA. In past, we know, Mulatoes were preferential desired to be workers in the big house. We pray that this ancient legacy didn’t carry over into the election. I think his victory had a lot to do with the character, personality and policies of Bush, the down fall of the American economy, and McCain not grasping the fundamentals of it. Now we challenge Europe to top or match us.
Pundits and talking heads are jumping to the conclusion that The Bill Cosby show helped pave the way for Obama to take the keys of the White House (no, it was 50 years of Civil Rights in the making). The Cosby show would have been more real if the two parents were both lawyers or doctors. Birds of the same fetters do flock together. Cosby is the wrong model to use as an analogy to Obama victory because many blacks in the Ghetto were offended by his polarizing comments he has yet to explain. The Cosby Show from 1984-1992 showed no bridge between the inner city and the upper middle class. In contrast, I enjoyed watching The Steve Harvey Show because the show featured a bridge between a Black woman from the Ghetto, Loveta Alize Jenkins, who was given a chance to work at Booker T. Washington School and move up. The NAACP gave them an image award. The Cosby Show was more of a display of Bi-racial kids than uplifting kids up out of the Ghetto. Cosby has went from the junkyard of Fat Albert’s gang into the surgery room .During the journey he would have made mockery at a black woman for naming a daughter like Alize or anything ghetto like it. In the past there was research done on white corporations throwing resumes in the basket with black sounding names. Unfortunately Cosby inadvertently gave support to this discrimination with his ridiculing black parents for naming kids with unique, weird sounding black names. President-elect Obama should be sensitive to name issues. Millions of whites from the GOP thought it relevant that his middle name alone disqualified him for his new political job.
Some Black people discriminate against other blacks who walk, talk, dress, names, skin shade, Job titles, age and so on are different from the middle class to the working poor or unemployed. However, Corporate discrimination is no comparison because it’s not in the same league. Obama accused the GOP of not invoking the name of the middle class but Obama never mentioned the poor; which was MLK’s last campaign for before he was killed. Well poor people vote too and they are looking for a new deal too Yo. Obama already startin off on the wrong foot by not going to the Barbershop anymore. The barbershop is the place to be if you want to hear it like it is from the streets. Can’t be afraid to be amongst “your people”, your constituents. After all his constituents just want a square deal which is a healing for the nation.
