Obama Urges Senate to Pass Unemployment Extension

July 19) -- In anticipation of Tuesday's unemployment extension vote in the Senate, President Barack Obama made an appearance in the Rose Garden this morning to urge legislators to pass a bill that would extend the period to apply for unemployment aid through the end of November. With last week's appointment of Carte Goodwin to the late Robert Byrd's vacated West Virginia Senate seat, the bill is expected to pass.
Obama also addressed the conservative argument that continuing unemployment benefits acts as a disincentive for the unemployed to actively seek new jobs.

"These leaders in the Senate who are advancing a misguided notion that emergency relief somehow discourages people from looking for a job should talk to these folks," Obama said, directing the audience's attention to three unemployed Americans sharing the stage with him. "That attitude, I think, reflects a lack of faith in the American people."

Obama Pushes Congress to Pass Unemployment Benefits Extension

In a sharp, scolding tone, President Obama on Monday castigated the "partisan minority" who have held the workers of America "hostage to politics" by delaying the extension of unemployment benefits. The president called for Congress to pass the extension, which will come up for vote tomorrow, saying it was "time to do what's right -- not for the next election, but for the middle class."

In making his case, Obama stood alongside three people -- Jim Chukalas of Fredon Township, N.J., Leslie Macko of Charlottesville, Va., and Denise Gibson of Queens, N.Y. -- who are out of work and for whom the extension of benefits was characterized as critical. Obama noted that all three were actively looking for work but needed "emergency relief to help them pay the rent and cover their utilities and put food on the table while they're looking for another job."

The president recalled a "long tradition" of providing relief to the unemployed under previous administrations -- Republican and Democratic alike -- criticizing those who had championed policies that "turned a record surplus into a massive deficit, the same people who didn't have any problem spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans [and] are now saying we shouldn't offer relief to middle class Americans who really need help."

The president made clear his frustration at the thus-far stymied efforts to pass the extension "not once, not twice, but three times." He targeted Senate Republican leaders who were "advancing a misguided notion that emergency relief somehow discourages people from looking for a job," countering that those needing unemployment benefits were "honest, decent, hardworking folks who've fallen on hard times through no fault of their own; who have nowhere else to turn except unemployment benefits; who need emergency relief to help them weather this economic storm."

    please understand to simplify things bit;
an old West African fable (maybe)

a poor young man with 7 children, finds a pot of gold,
    his wife says praises praises
now we are no longer poor, and we can feed our children each day instead of once a week
and build a home and hearth, so they no longer have to beg for fufu and wecan make our own fufu,
and no longer sleep in this damp cave

    but the man said

there are robbers and maruders in this land that will surely attack us for this gold,
let us seek them out and give them some gold to pacify their greed so they will leave us alone.

his wife said those brigands are on the other side the kingdom, and know not of your discovery,
take care of those you love first!

but out of great fear the man gave a nugget of gold to to a traveling merchant nearby in town, and told him please tell the brigands my message,
now being a merchant and hearing the message he became greedy and said
for this task you must give me 1/10 of your gold,
so inspite of his wifes pleading and his children's tears he did so

when the brigands emisary came to the man, he came with his master of arms,
but the man was known to be one skilled in the arts so they could not rob him

The man said here I have already given 1/10 of this gold therefore as protecton money I wish to give you half to leave me and my beloved children in peace.
the brigands said yes 5/10 sounds like a good deal, but his brother the master of arms over heard this so he planned to get some for himself as well which would go into the robbers collective,

    so he said
there are creatures beyond that hill, fearful creatures half man and half lion,
that we must go to war with to save this village for surly those creatures will raid the village at night and devour all the children

so the man thought but his wife said,
how can you believe such a tall tale? and what proof has he of such monsters,
besides what will be left of the gold for us?

but the man thought in fear and said maybe there be and maybe they be not,
    besides,
I hear there is great farm land on that side of the hill and the war with those beasts will enrich the village,
so he gave the master of arms 4/10 of the gold

when he looked at the pot
there was nothing left but dust,
so he went to the brigands and they said our brothers war is not over, but will be by the time your seven children are grown, fret not,
besides we have our own youth and families to feed,
    and times are hard.

so he went from door to door to beg to his neighbors,
and one by one they replied

where you not that young man we saw back when,
with that huge pot of gold?

All due respect my brother but my faith is in my people,
and not the corporatocracy that has enslaved and psychicly impoverished us.

Right now I am listening to Michael Jackson singing "What About Us"

A bank holds money for people, plain and simple,
but if the people have no money from lousy jobs, foreclosures or HMO bills, what can they put into a bank?

So if a bank is dependant on people, why bail out the banks first before taking care of the people?

doesnt take a degree in politics or economics to see that

The fact of the matter is that the Glass Steagal Act was put in place by FDR to prevent another depression.

The depression of the 30s was able to bounce back because the basis of capitalism was not outsourced.
The machines that make the machines. And the machine parts that make them.

Manufacturing was 70% of the economy.
    There were no subprime mortgages,
    or hedge funds
and no such thing as derivatives,
which are triple Z credits that are bundled and stamped with a bold faced lie that they are now triple A,
and then bandied around and gambled upon.

back then all Americans Black and white had 30% of their money in savings

    Now todays world;
    1 Glass Steagal destroyed
    2 70% outsourced manufacturing
3 even folks making 90 thousand per year have no or little savings and living pay check to pay check

Therefore what is the stock market based on?
    pushing papers?
gambling money borrowed from Saudis and China?
    the debt created from wars?

Even the UN has sanctioned IMF notes to supercede the dollar, and that is no conspiracy theory, they actually have NWO notes in the works, and China has been scooping them up.

    Now look at Sister and Brother in the 50s, even with Jim Crow, and haveing to go to work school and shopping with little respect or safety;

    a salary held weight,
that is what a brother made per month could afford him a car, not a car note.
what he made in 4 months could afford him not a modest home but a good house for his family and elders

what does a months salary get one today?

Most folks are now working 2 jobs just to make enough to pay what one job would pay for 5 years ago.

Goldman Sachs is in every level of Washington finance and the man that wrecked Glass Steagall, and helped establish GATT and NAFTA , that impoverished millions of Black union factory workers sits at the helm of national finance.

Why would one trust a foreign owned corporation like the Federal Reserve, to do Cosumer protection?
would one put an arsonit as firechief?http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-515319560256183936#

what is Cap and Trade? and why must Black folks foot the bill for corporations rapeing the mother earth?

    what is public private partnership?

and what kinds of tolls will we pay on tunnels, bridges and highways when some foreign corporation will defacto own them?
and what kind of hell will folks go through when water beocomes privatized?
here in Harlem the privatization of schools has torn the Black community apart with parents faced to have no choice but be crabs in a barrel fighting for schools that will hod only 8% of the population,
while schools here and across the 50 states are being ssht down as we type

So really there will be no bounce back but some really hellish times

Never in the history of the Uniited States had any state gone bank rupt but now there are 42

No my faith is not in this corporate plutocracie's nationalism,
my faith is in Black Nationalism, because as a people when we look at what is going on today and where the cuts will be made so the money can flow in other pockets, Black Nationalism is no longer a choice like a flavor of ice cream,
but a moral imperative for our survival
