Cuban bassist and composer Israel "Cachao" Lopez, credited with pioneering the mambo style of music, was called a major influence in Cuban musical history, with his passing marking the end of an era. Born in Havana in 1918, he began performing with the Havana symphony orchestra as a teenager, and wrote hundreds of songs in Cuba for bands and orchestras. He was 89.

Robinson, a Detroit Pistons scout who discovered Joe Dumars and Dennis Rodman, broke the racial barrier in the 1970s when he coached Illinois State, becoming the first black basketball coach at a Division I school. He was 96.

Diddley was a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians. He was 79.

Mac, an award-winning actor-comedian, died at age 50 from complications of pneumonia. He was 50.
08/10 - Issac Hayes
Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, was found dead in his home. He was 65.
08/19 - LeRoi Moore
Moore, an accomplished saxophonist and one of the founding members of the Dave Matthews Band died in Los Angeles from complications resulting from an all-terrain vehicle accident in June. He was 46.
10/17 - Levi Stubbs
Stubbs died at his home in Detroit. He was 72. In this 1966 file photo are the Four Tops members: Abdul Fakir, Stubbs, Lawrence Payton, and Renaldo Benson. With Stubbs in the lead, the Four Tops sold millions of records, including such hits as "Baby I Need Your Loving," "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)."

Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who gained world recognition with her sultry voice but was banned from her own country for more than 30 years under apartheid, died after collapsing on stage in Italy. She was 76.
12/02 - Odetta Holmes
Odetta, the folk singer with the powerful voice who moved audiences and influenced fellow musicians for a half-century, has died. She was 77. She was active in the civil rights movement and her music was a profound influence on everyone from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez to Janis Joplin and Maya Angelou.
