RACIAL GENETICS AND CULTURE

omowalejabali said:
As more family societies are using today's technology to prove or disprove family relationships through past centuries research findings are leading to new theories concerning the origins and human iinteractions of these various societies and the civilizations and/or cultures from which we have evolved. Researchers tend to analyze the Y chromosome of various DNA project participants so that they can discover whether males with a particular surname (and their female children) have a common ancestor. With proper testing and analysis, families with common surnames can potentially be linked by a common ancestor over timescales of hundreds or thousands of years. Of course, it is very likely that all people with a common surname do not share a single blood-line but DNA analysis should be able to determine the nature of modern familial relationships and their ancestral origins. The following is an example of one such project that some of my relatives have participate.

"Looking for biological determinants of race is nothing new. It has a potent history, with poisonous associations dating back to the early days of eugenics. But contemporary science has given these efforts a new respectability. In the wake of completion of the Human Genome Project geneticists are trying to arrange pieces of the genome like a Rubik's Cube, searching for patterns of variation that align into some useful matrix. Their goal is to generate information that will help prevent and treat common diseases. But in the process, they're generating information that might also lead to declarations about the biological meaning of race.

The new interest in racial genetics comes at a time when the softer sciences like anthropology and sociology, have declared that race is a cultural construct, without any biological significance."
