Black People Politics : No, I Won’t Empathize With a Trump Supporter Now—Here’s Why

 Too far gone...

What Do We Do About All These Trump Supporters?

The Trump presidency has divided families and destroyed friendships—and there may be no repairing the damage

Like the Civil War, which pitted brother against brother, and the Vietnam War, which pitted father against son, the Trump presidency has cleaved relationships from sea to sea. It has forced people to take sides. It’s caused psychic wounds that figure to grow worse, not heal, in the days and weeks to come. Trump’s angry, divisive tenure has accomplished the destruction Stan Van Gundy, to use another example from the world of sports, surely meant when he tweeted, on September 30: “For me the saddest thing about this whole Trump presidency has been finding out that people I knew, liked and respected, including some guys I coached support this racist, misogynistic, narcissistic person. Painfully disappointing revelations.”

If they're family, or even good friends, they should be able to put aside their differences. But it may take some time.

However, if the splits were caused by a belief that Blacks are not equal or that Mexican children deserve to caged, I'm not going along with that.

An Analysis of Trump Supporters Has Identified 5 Key Traits

A new report sheds light on the psychological basis for Trump's support

In a recent review paper published in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology, Psychologist and UC Santa Cruz professor Thomas Pettigrew argues that five major psychological phenomena can help explain this exceptional political event.

Trump supporters are White and Latino people, but mostly White, who remain aghast that a Black man won the White House and then won re-election.

They still cannot believe it and psychologically want to erase the memory of these historic events. Because Obama's competence, saving the nation from a Depression and his restoring of the country's high standing around the globe, diminishes them. In their heads, Obama is representative and responsible for their smaller role in world affairs.

Who the hell looks to Britain for world leadership? People are looking past the U.S. and east to China as this Asian giant challenges the U.S. Navy for dominance in the Pacific Ocean. Trump made the U.S. a laughingstock. Not only did people in other countries make fun at Trump, so did their world leaders and while he was in the same building.

Obama they respected because they all noticed his calm and resolute demeanor which generated the respect he commanded at meetings with other world leaders. When Japanese students and others wanted to learn how to speak proper English, they watched and listened to videotapes of Obama speaking.

This is one reason why Trump has always had nothing but disdain for President Barack Obama, a man who was gifted with intelligence, a writing and editing ability and of course, unimaginable skill at public speaking.

In order to engage a Trump supporter, you will first have to get past their residual anger and embarrassment of being underfoot to a Black man who shattered 232 years of what they swore was White excellence by beating his first White House opponent by seven percentage points.

They shouldn't be embarrassed at all. Some Black folks still do not get it that when one of us graduates from a university or a college, buys a home, succeeds in business or the sciences, earns millions from their entertainment talents or continues our race's physical domination of pro sports - they view all of this as a defeat for themselves.
Very well put my brother....The first couple of paragraphs speak volumes. Truth to Power.. Correction, the entire post is the resounding truth!
Obama represents everything that Trump doesn't and couldn't. The Obama family were the total opposite of what a lot of white folks thought of black families. They shot a canon ball straight through all of those so-called black stereotypes. Excellent post Discerning..

Personally, it ain't gonna happen for me.

Realistically, trump supporters deserve no sympathy at all from black people. Truth be told we were voting for democracy. Whites were voting for white supremacy!
