Black People : Next Question Everybody ... What Makes You Gravitate Toward or Make Friends with Some People?

Historically most black people have had limited exposure to whites due to segregation. I am talking direct contact not via the media. Things have changed since the 60s but even then the majority of black people have no direct contact with whites. We remain relatively divided and isolated and our alienation is causing increased marginalization. This is why I mentioned the OWS. It helped me to see that we have finally reached a point where the liberal/Marxist-socialist agenda has clearly failed in its 'Black Vanguard' theory. I could not make the same argument 20 years ago but today it is clear the liberal agenda has failed because there is no true black working class leadership on a mass scale. It has been politically neutralized and economically disenfranchised. Just look around. How many black people here are doing coalition work with whites trying to build common ground? We can't even come together to build consensus among ourselves, and less are trying to do so each day.

A lot of truth in the above.

However, one can't expect to knock the ball out of the bark every time they
step to the plate and take the first swing, then call it a game before we reach
middle of the inning if we don't knock it out of the park. Many of our aims
have been stunted; major set backs -no question.

THE_GOD said in another thread he (...we) will never ever have power.
Is he right?

I suggested that as of this point we stop having children (encourage our
children and or their children) to stop having kids, that way we'll just
phase out of existence. I doubt that many folks, here on Destee.com or
beyond, would accept that. But no power means death (sooner or later), right?

Regardless of whatever 'movement' black folks wanna title it, we'll never
get on base (ya'know, got to step on the first base before you make it home)
if we abort the game for not hitting a homerun... on the first swing.

So then I guess we should just do like john mayer and sit "waiting on the
world to change"?

From what you've shared in the past threads, you are doing some very good
things out west. Hang in there 'obi wan'... Who knows how many anakin's it will
take to find luke. That seems to be the way of things. We keep plugging, poking
probing and prodding. Just maybe she/he's in your classroom. Or runnin' with
a crew that I rap with from around the way from time to time when we find
ourselves in a cypher.

If Clyde can believe in jesus the christ; I can believe in us. (a little levity)

Brother Raptor, in all respect, if we are gonna use sports analogies, this game is in exta innins, and about to be called due to "darkness". How many of our Elders/Leaders have stepped to the plate and otten on base, only for us to strike out and then give up points making errors while on defense?

I will NEVER state that we will "never ever have power" but power is relative. If we are talking about political and economic power here in the US then I agree because we will never ever own the LAND to base a real revolution. Brother Malik el Shabazz taught us that ALL revolutions are based on LAND. If we are not about acquiring LAND and Nation-building, then our political action in the US remains politically impotent.

It is a different situation in Africa in which the entire continent is a contested zone. Its either African independence and self-determination or eropean re-colonization and imperialism. There is no middle round in Africa. Its do for self or die. We in the US have no such imperative. Not yet. We can continue tostraaddle and ride the fence. Co-opt to the liberal and/or white conservative agenda. Front for the Democrats and continue giving our vote wholesale, because we don't see ourselves threatened directly with mass extermination and genocide.

My inital response here was taking into consideration my own experience within the system of public schooling where I first encontered 'white people'. It was not until junior high that I can recall havin white teachers and white classmates because rowin up in south central LA I attended a Baptist elementary school. All black faculty and staff. All black classmates. This chaned when I moved to the westside and attended a predominantly white, jewish school. The same with the ih school I attended and played sports. Mostly white and jewish. Some of my classmates I have been 'friends' with to this day. I moved back to the same neighborhood I grew up in and have had contact with some of them outside of facebook upon returning. Facebook is now our main point of interaction. One of the directors at my worksite is white and jewish. Attended the same high school. He is more an associate than a 'friend'. So in many instances, my interations and associations are a result of schooling and career networking. Also from my college (UCLA) alumni group.

So, no, I am not simply "waitin for the world to change". Too busy working with the youth, trying to chane the world. However, I do reconize that most of US here in the US do not seem interested in doing the same. Therefore, my emphasis, outside of the worksite, is now on trying to heal THYSELF. Working on establishing Balance (Ma'at) WITHIN, if I cannot change without.

I came to these conclusions due to two factors. The first is the lack of concern, as well as the arguments I encountered from black people, as I tried to raise folks concern over the situation in Libya and to this date, most of us just dont seem to care. Even my most "proressive" black friends have been virtually silent. My white "friends" as well. The situation in the Congo. Same lack of response. Virtually no concern from the "white left" either. OWS was my last straw with the white left and their black counterparts. No more trying political activism as a strategy. The focus now for me is personal health, fitness and wellness. This is the second factor. Out of necessity. If I dont focus on gettin my own health, fitness and wellness together, then I can not continue to do the work I do with the youth or with the Elders in my community. As I focus on SELF, white folks no longer are the issue so long as they dont cause me no direct stress or "blockage" to the centers within my body that I am focusing on healing.

Outside of the fact or idea that some white people might like the same music that we do or some of the same foods or way of dressing (which is ours anyway), or even that we might like some of the same movies or may not like the po po....what do you think that our people and white people have in common that would cause us to gravitate to them or label them as our friends or that they're okay???

What do we have in common???? I'm really curious and I already know that I'm asking just as a means of understanding our people and our thought processes as it relates to them.

Outside of those facts, because I don't really make friends from those facts anyhow, it's just like-mindedness, altogether.

In faith, I don't deny any friendship based on the color of their skin or even past actions when they are repentant; a friend is there for you no matter what, despite differences, and in sharing the same faith, I don't mean a common title as "Christian", I mean the same faith, we would already be one in the same body, anyhow, of the same House of the Father on High.

That's what would be a reason for me to befriend anyone white; I couldn't say for others because everyone has different reasons why they choose their friends.

Now don't go off, because you asked a question and I answered! lol
