A university professor of Indian origin was among three victims at a US
college shooting that departed only slightly from the script.

The perpetrator was not a student but a faculty member, and a woman teacher at that.

Amy Bishop, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist, allegedly opened fire at faculty
meeting at the University of Alabama’s biological sciences department after
reportedly being upset over being denied tenure. Among those killed were
Gopi K Podila, chairman of the department, and two faculty members — Maria
Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. Three were injured.

Podila is the second university don of Indian origin to die in campus shooting
that have become increasingly common in recent years. VirginiaTech’s
professor G V Loganathan died in a campus massacre in 2007 and several
Indian students have died in an assortment of shooting and homicide
incidents.

Podila was an alumnus of the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) in Andhra
Pradesh from where he received a BSc in biological sciences before coming to
the US for an MSc in plant pathology from Louisiana State University in 1983
and a doctorate in molecular biology from Indiana State University in 1987.

The youngest of four children, Podila leaves behind wife Vani, a chartered
accountant, and two daughters — Bindu, 16, and Anila, 13.

The carnage occurred in a third-floor conference room of the Shelby Center,
a 200,000-square-foot science building on a campus, which has a significant
number of Indian faculty and students. According to media reports, Bishop
had been denied tenure, a senior academics contract based on strong
published research and teaching record, on Friday. She apparently returned
to the faculty meeting in the afternoon and opened fire.

Amy Bishop, 42, who gunned down the Indian origin professor Gopi Podila and
two others on University of Alabama campus, was taken into custody outside
the institute without further incident and later escorted in handcuffs from a
police precinct to the county jail. Local reports quoted her as muttering, “It
didn’t happen. There’s no way.... they are still alive,’’ as she was taken away.

After his early education in Kakinada and Visakhapatnam, Podila graduated in
botany from Hindu College in Guntur between 1974-77 and went on to do his
post-graduation from ANU in Guntur between 1977-79.

A gold medallist, he was taught by his father P S Prakash Rao, who was head
of the biological sciences at ANU.
