New Senate Will Have No African-Americans

There is one African-American in the current Senate: Illinois Sen. Roland Burris, who was appointed to fill out the rest of Barack Obama's term after he was elected president.

In the new Senate there will be zero.

All three African-American candidates are projected to lose their races: Florida's Kendrick Meek to Marco Rubio, Georgia's Michael Thurmond to Johnny Isakson and South Carolina's Alvin Greene to Jim DeMint. (All three are Democrats.) Burris is retiring, and neither of the contenders to fill his seat is African-American.

Six African-Americans have served in the Senate. Along with Burris and Mr. Obama, they are (in reverse chronological order) Carol Moseley Braun (also of Illinois), Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, and Blanche K. Bruce and Hiram Revels of Mississippi.

African-Americans are better represented in the House, where there are currently 41 black members.

    Gotta love this 'democratic' process.
Anymore "Get out & vote", and we won't even exist.

And with all the republicans who will be moving into the House alot of Black staffers will join the ranks of increasing numbers of unemployed government sector workers. Even though the repubs say Obama is about big government guess who is coming to town and will be enlarging the state bureaucracy?

When Obama won the presidential nomination i told friends not to get to happy because the Senate would be lily-white. No that is the reality, only now a more conservative Senate with a reactionary House of reps.

The thing now is that in the future if Black folks are able to win a party nomination white will just by-pass the mainstrean parties and run as independents...which is something i have been urging Black folks to do for years!!!

We still stuck on ONE METHOD the DP (the majority of Black folks in the usa that is) which is broken down and in a state of dis-repair.

the fact of the matter is that as they mobilized when Germany was going through a depression and
they mobilize today as the tea party nationaly,
and guided by the same fascists corporations as back then.

but they got what they wanted in the white house yesterday

using modalities of unity and collective work and the investment of the millionaires of the race, that we have been encouraged to do by the greatest Black minds in the nation for every 20 years since reconstruction, from Garvey to Amos Wilson.
we mope and talk but where is our national effort, or focus on one?

folks even attack the idea and concept of a national Black political agenda so
where is the energy focus and funds going to come from to put our folks in the senate?

the Freedom party can do it if we work together to assist its growth nationaly,
and use real social networking to make it happen
