We've been taught for many years--way too long--that the natural coils in a Black person's hair is something to be feared and rejected. It's natural denseness gives us extra protection from the sun as darker skin does but many Black women are running to get straight hair and lighter skin.

Black women have a love hate relationship with their hair and it's sad because we are so beautiful together.

Black women run to the local beauty supply stores every week to find hair products that promise to make their beautifully kinky coils more "manageable" because she's been taught to think of her hair in its natural state as a nuisance, the enemy and time-consuming chore. We want the comb to glide through the hair shafts with ease and little tangles. We are attracted to the shine of straight hair and its length. In movies we love to see men run their fingers through straight hair but we dare not allow that in real life if we're wearing weaves so we tell men, "Don't mess with my hair!", even in the most intimate situations.

Companies that sell hair-care products rush to stock shelves with items that convince the Black woman that if she uses them, she'll certainly be more beautiful because she will look like 'other' women. We seldom look at the ingredients, we mostly read the description of the product and what it claims to do for us then we purchase. We leave beauty supply stores with bags filled with products and they line the shelves or fill cabinets in our homes.

We are willing to suffer through skin burns from straightening chemicals, alopecia from stressing our nubian curls by wearing weaves for too long and tight braiding. But we're addicted so it's not easy to stop.

We want to feel good about ourselves and there's nothing wrong with that. A healthy dose of self-esteem is good for you. But we risk far too much searching for self-esteem by the way our hair looks and how we feel and think of our hair.

Not only is she now suffering from alopecia from wearing too many weaves and tight braids, she's wearing false lashes that are glued on and what is that doing to her eyes if she's doing this every day?? :bye:

    Unfortunately, its called ... Self-Hate,

There are lots of us unaware of our self indulgence in the syndrome of self-hate, smh.

But its worthy of deep dialog, and we started it, in fact, the Thread remains open for serious solution from those not faint of heart as some posters were:facepalm:
