Another Sunday morning everybody all dressed up
headed to the church trying to fill my cup
preacher keeps preaching, choir on point
looking fine in their robes, blowing up the joint
God's not dead, he's yet alive
praise Him for your 9 to 5
mother's in corner bout to get her dance on
deacon's in the back talking on a 2nd chance phone
all waiting for the rapture, reward in the sky
while nobody mentions how their all living a lie
when's the last time you sat down and washed somebody's feet or
walked the 2nd mile to bear your brother's burden in the summertime heat?
you passed that brother begging nickels on your way out the gate
from that american dream house mortgage and didn't bother to look his way
see that sister on the corner? now you wanna call her a whore
but she's trying to feed her babies, besides who did your Jesus look for

hypocrites and pharisees, tombs filled with dead men's bones
you'da been the ones looking at him trying to throw stones
my matted locks, tattoos, body piercings that's all you see
but me? I'm the whore who used her tears to wash your savior's feet
everybody bought the dream, pie in the sky, eternal life
but you won't ever find it in religiosity and strife
take a minute read your gospel, there's a reason why it's called good news
but what I see in your faces when you look at me is news of a different hue
tell me why you plug your nose when you smell the wine on my breath
Jesus ate with thieves, and drank with some right before his death
oh you wanna be a disciple, apostle, prophet, scribe?
from what I see in the text not one of them was rich when they died
the foxes have holes, birds of the air nests, but the son of man nowhere to rest
now you wanna tell me how you equate big houses, big cars, and diamonds with being blessed?

I wanna preach a different gospel, a new reality, some better news
I'm tired of singing gospel, can I bless ya'll with some blues?
Let me take a minute, find the note that's too deep for most of ya'll to hear
Ahem, I gotta clear my throat, take a breath try to calm my fear
I don't have the voice of angels, or the eloquence of king
hell, most people I know will tell I can't even sing
but I know the truth when it hits dead in my face
and the truth is what I find in church ain't amazing, and it sho ain't grace
dressed up sisters, finding the nearest thing to white to please a white man's god
I'm made in his image, but I gotta straighten my hair to look like him - don't you find that odd?
and where in Egypt could that blue-eyed bandit hanging on your wall hide?
oh, wait a minute, I missed that reinterpretation, you got the black Christ hanging on the other side
does he teach you how to love, how to heal your brother's pain
or is he just the blue-eye with a little cocoa stain?

I wish I could make ya'll wake up, smell the coffee, find the path
cause the end has got to come, and with it the wrath
but I know everybody wants to feel good, live that great american dream
but when you lay dying, tell me then what all this is gonna mean
when you have to meet your maker, will he care that you looked down on me
preached the gospel that made me a whore, and not worth a glance to see
if you could help me find my way if not to him to a better reality?
cause it's not all about the label it's about the life you lead
I could be a christian, moslem, jew, wiccan, priestess, or witch
but does it really matter if I pull you out of the ditch?
I could wear a hat, wig, head wrap, or locks
if I change my headdress will it help you step outside your box?
Now that's my gospel for a new generation, a new time,
take minute, take a sip, maybe it'll open your blinded eyes
