I am Co-ordinating a Daughter-Mother Tea for my daughter(s) Brownie Girl Scout Troop.

    Our theme is: "GIRL POWER"

They will be performing a play entitled "Me in the Mirror" that deals with the insecurites that some African Americans have with our features, such as juicy lips, big hips, curly hair, etc.

The girls also will be the musical selection by, India Arie, called "Video"

Where I need your help is with a few poems that go with the theme "Girl Power" and the overall flow of the event, which is "Self-Acceptance and tolerance for the differences in others with a bit of an Afrocentric flavoring.

We need a welcome poem, our troop has invited other troops within our council and we need a general poem for about the middle of the event.

We thank everyone and anyone in advance for their help.

    Peace.

Hello Indypendence ... thanks for joining us.

Are you asking the poets to donate their work or are you willing to pay them?

    Thanks for the Welcome.

This is a Girl Scout Event. We operate off of volunteers (me and our other mothers), donations and the $2 dues the girls aged 6 - 9 pay every other week.

We earned a few dollars with our cookie salesto fund this event and a day trip for the girls to the birthplace of the founder of girl scouting in Savannah, which won't be bad, because our troop is based out of Atlanta, GA.

To make a long story short, we can give someone maybe $20 or $25, but anything over that we just aren't able to afford.

    Thanks:love:

Hello Indypendence ... $20 or $25 would probably be plenty ... i don't know. I'm not a poet and am not sure how the poets would charge.

Let me say too, that we appreciate you stopping to ask for the words, rather than surfing the site and finding some that fit your needs and use them, without permission. You are the first person that has ever made an inquiry such as this, and been willing to pay the poets for their work. This is very encouraging, to me and the poets. Perhaps a sign from God of things to come! Thank You.

Now that the particulars are out here ... I'm going to move this thread to the poetry forum, where the poets can see it. Normally, threads such as this are not allowed in there, but this is certainly an exception! You will probably receive more than a few folk willing to help (as it is a great encouragement, for them to be paid for their art).

I will leave all else between you and whichever poet you choose to do business with. Please let us know how it goes.

Wow ... This is very exciting ... thank you!

ps ... poets ... it may be time for you to set up a www.paypal.com account, so you can be prepared to receive the funds when opportunities present themselves.

    THE SPARE RIB

    Delicate creation
    Graceful mutation
    Sugar and spice
    The concept ~ so nice

    Means to an end
    Daughter or friend
    Whom else... but your mama
    Delivered in trauma

    Soft and sweet
    Though hardly weak
    Queen of a race...
    She's nobody's freak

    Made us a nation
    Gave daddy a wife
    Worked fingers to bone
    Sustaining our lives

    May God bless this woman
    I've known since a kid
    I'll always crave her...

LIL GIRL BROWN! (Former Girl Scout)

Lil girl brown with your eyes so big.
Don't be ashame when you jiggle if you dance
    a happy jig.
Lil girl brown with your lips so full.
don't you know your words a whole nation
    will pull.
Lil girl brown with your head held down.
Cause you don't see yourself in the commercial
    on TV.
Lil girl brown don't you know the real women look
    like you and me.
Lil girl brown with your nappy hair or straight.
Angels look like you standing at the pearly gate.
Lil girl brown when others put you down.
Remember where you came from and remember
    who you are.
Lil girl brown don't wear your face in a frown.
Look at yourself and see your special beauty.
And turn that frown upside down.
Lil girl brown when you jump rope and touch
    the ground.
Don't you know it's your uniqueness that other's
    want to be around.
Lil girl brown with your shape like no other...
that's not true just look at your beautiful mother!
Lil girl brown with so much to give.
You are beautiful and special and a gift from God.
Lil girl brown when you are feeling down.
Just think of all the other brown faces that daily
    surround.
The Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey, M'onique and Starr
Jones, Venus and Serena and Halle to name a few.
They were all once Lil Brown girls just like you!

I'm going to "unstick" this thread now and let it take it's rightful place in the house.

If you all think it needs to remain on the "first page" of the poetry forum ... you know what ta do

I hope we will remember what they are looking for!

We should be considering that these poems should be age appropriate...within the tenets of "the Girl Scout" laws...also we want to keep in mind that lil girls will more than likely be reading these poems! Just a thought! Happy writing. If you are not sure about Girl Scout tenets and laws they do have a website and I have some info from my days as a Girl scout as well.
Love you my sisters let's bless the future generation with something they can stand and deliver with Pride and self assurance!

    Blessings On Ya House!

While several have contributed poetry to this thread, I see an opportunity for business to be transacted. This is a much needed area of development amongst us. Every poet dreams of being paid for their work ... surely they must?

Every poet could make money this way. Create a www.paypal.com account. When an inquiry such as this is made, the payment for poetry can be made prior to any poetry being submitted ... so you know you've got the job, because you got the money ... and all you must do is deliver a quality product, which may include research regarding the requested poem (as MsLuciousB suggests).

Indypendence ... or the poet that ultimately made the money so generously offered by Indypendence ... please let us know how things went. This is a first for us and I'd like to know how successful the attempt at conducting business, as a result of this forum, has been.

Let us not hinder the process of doing business with each other.
