Black Sports : NBA player Jason Collins comes out as gay

Peace,

It's about taking some responsibility. Either white people are just so smart that they've managed to put us in a situation that we can't work our way out of or, we've become so dependent and handicapped that we don't even know our situation is bad in the first place.

When we take the shackles off our brains we'll be just fine as a people. Then we'll actually start doing things instead of always talking about it.

Peace

Precise Allah, black Americans were taken as slaves from the African continent, so were all the black folks here in the Caribbean..the difference is the political system. Blacks are 90% of the population here. The governments are all black. The schools have most black teachers.. Blacks are in the minority in the USA....this has a lot to do with it. Black governments here invest in their people particularly in EDUCATION. The US political situation is one which does not have the interest of black folks at heart...but blacks must use the education that they can have and do something. White people are not all that smart....The racist policies have been entrenched for so many years....BUT that is no excuse. I believe that blacks in the USA must be unified. Having a two car garage and a home and money in the bank is not going to cut it for blacks. Black must be willing to see the economic advantage they have. If there were more black businesses and black folks supported them to the exclusion of white business that could mean a lot. Blacks have some economic power which can strangle hold the white businesses but we dont use it. . The entrepreneurial spirit must be harnessed and those with a good education must be willing to give back. Blacks must see that those who are in jail are their brothers and do whatever they can to help those who need the kind of help and mentoring that can enable young people to keep away from drugs and illiciit things. The crux of the matter is that the family structure of the black folks in the USA must be dealt with. Too many fathers just impregnating women and going off. I know there are family problems in other ethnic groups too, but the traditional black family as it existed in Africa was one where it took a village to raise a child and the extended family has always been part of blacks. One other thing I believe that there should have been closer ties with the blacks of the Caribbean and blacks in the USA. Culturally and educationally. We are one family but we have become fragmented and all of us are suffering as a result. There seems to be a hopelessness among blacks in the USA, a people without hope is a dead people. Until we see each other as part of our African family we will continue to bark at the moon.

We are one family but we have become fragmented and all of us are suffering as a result..
the thing is we didn't just BECOME fragmented. it was no accident it was part of a plan by the white system of supremacy.
the key is for blacks to be educated as to what our REAL DEAL is. we got to stop fighting among ourselves and identify the real enemy.
the global system of white supremacy.

Be educated is true THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A GOOD EDUCATION this cannot be excluded..but fighting the white man must be done on a level that will benefit us. Shadow boxing is not REAL boxing. White supremacy will always be here... as also racism...As I have said before, immigrants from other countries have achieve and continue to achieve in USA...what then what is the problem with blacks in the USA...These immigrants have to deal with racism too and the idea of white supremacy, but just looking at a historical view and not putting our hands to the wheel is not going to help us. I believe that there is too much talk and little action on our part. Must we continue to play dead and inactive. We spend our money on white businesses, it is time we invest it in our people and reap the benefits. What IF blacks decided to boycott white busineses as they did the buses in the 60's...we would see things happening. Most young blacks in the USA and here in the Caribbean opt for the brand name clothes that white folks sell at the exhorbitant prices off the the cheap labour of folks in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. When blacks begin to see that their spending power is REAL and IMPORTANT then things will start to change.

So long as whites rule the world, yes. But when blacks ruled the world, there was no such thing as race, much less "racism."

As I have said before, immigrants from other countries have achieve and continue to achieve in USA...what then what is the problem with blacks in the USA...

There is no "problem" with black Americans. If not for African-Americans, there would be no immigrant blacks in this country to achieve or do anything else. It was we who demanded President Johnson open the immigration gates to other blacks in the diaspora in the 1960's (large numbers of immigrant blacks are a pretty new phenomenon in America, something African-Americans DEMANDED - of a "white" president - and got). It was we who felled the forests, drained the swamps, who built the infrastructure of America and through our forced labor, turned the U.S. into a world power; we who went to the streets, who went to the polls, who did any and everything that made this country a shining beacon to blacks around the world today. Not a thing wrong with us.

These immigrants have to deal with racism too

If black immigrants were breaking down barriers and bursting through glass ceilings, blazing new paths for ALL blacks, I could see this 'why them and not you.' But they're not. Not only that, but the majority of black immigrants are not doing as well as similarly situated white AND yellow immigrants. Truth to tell, ALL immigrants do better than the race or ethnic group they "petitioned" to join. Immigrants are much more money-focused than native-born Americans, of any race. The proof of the pudding will the 2nd generation. Like all other, the grandchildren of those who came to America today will have the very same attitudes towards whites and their power structures as their African-American peers.

Reason? They won't be on the outside looking in. They will draw their attitudes and aspirations from insider examples, examples too legion and that they may not even be capable of putting into words of the treatment of their parents and grandparents; their own wholly American life experiences of triumphs, disappointments and shattered (immigrant) illusions of what being a black American is and the brick wall we face..... most times with a smile (do you really let your enemy, your tormentor know they've hurt you beyond words?)

and the idea of white supremacy, but just looking at a historical view and not putting our hands to the wheel is not going to help us. I believe that there is too much talk and little action on our part. Must we continue to play dead and inactive. We spend our money on white businesses, it is time we invest it in our people and reap the benefits. What IF blacks decided to boycott white busineses as they did the buses in the 60's...we would see things happening.

The Birmingham Bus Boycott did not result in blacks OWNING any buses. They simply got to sit in front of the bus. Although in fairness, a couple black men got jobs driving the bus....

Seeing what happened after that expenditure of energy and determination should encouage us to take a "historical view" of our actions and whites' reactions. It is said and it is true: "Those who don't learn from the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them."

'Children' don't look at the world with the eyes of adults. All they know, all they see, are their peers dressing fly and they want to BE fly too! Plus, it's a lot to ask of a child, or even a young adult, to 'do as I say and not as I do.' Adults can talk until they're blue in the face, but until there are a whole lotta black "role models" out there taking risk and succeeding..... or, like "immigrant black Americans, doing a thing because unlike African-Americans, they don't know they CAN'T do it!.... the young will continue to follow in the adults "don't rock the boat/like my hustle?" footsteps. Children are the foot soldiers of any great undertaking; adults are the generals. WE need to start acting like it.

P.S. Next time you see a kid of great promise, don't tell him/her "you're going to be a big man/woman someday." HELP them to prepare for that future role that you, ADULT, see as a distinct possibility in their futures. Don't just say: "oh, you're so scientific-minded - you can be a doctor!" TELL them what colleges train doctors, what grades they'll need to get in those schools, etc.
