    Graviola

The rainforest is home to a remarkable natural pharmacy that never ceases to amaze me.

Although I've studied the indigenous healing tradition of the Amazon for years, I find there is always some new discovery waiting for me. The latest find is graviola, a small evergreen tress that grows throughout Peru, Guyana and Brazil.

It is **** near impossible to get the actual fruit here in America. Trust me, I've tried. The only way that I know of is to get it Mexico and bring it in across the border.

This fruit is grown and eaten here in Barbados. I ate so many of this fruit as a child and still eat it today. It can be eaten plain or can be squeezed into a pulp and mixed with milk and sugar and spice. The fruit is soft with black seeds. The branches of this tree was used by the old people here as a natural mosquito repellant. The leaves were placed under the bed and for some reason the mosquitoes hated the smell of the leaves. I am not sure if anyone use the leaves for this purpose today, since many black folks would prefer the chemicals in the spray cans.

Any of you folks on here want any you might have to come here to Barbados and live...Lol. I am not sure if the Plant Quarantine Unit of our Department of Agriculture can allow the exportation of this fruit.

I do not have a tree, but they are available at the local supermarkets. For those who own trees, the owners just give them to friends and family who do not have. Interesting that this fruit is common here and I wonder if we here in this country recognise its importance.

    In the Spirit of Sankofa,

    ... Hey sister dunwiddat,

We may have just stumble upon an enterprise, resulting in a win-win for all. What if you check and found that the fruit can be deported! It would open a market beneficial to Barbadians (possible you/others) and African Americans.

Would you be willing to check on this?

    Peace In,

Will check and let you know if it can be exported. We import lots of US fruit, grapes, apples, plums, cherries etc..but not sure if any of our local fruit enjoy the same privilege, but will do my best.

Coger...some of our local foods like yams and eddoes, sweet potato and breadfruit, perhaps some fruits can be purchased in New York where many of our people from Barbados and the Caribbean live...you MIGHT be able to get it there. I will still check on the exportation aspect as I have mentioned before.
