In the Spirit of Sankofa ... Nat Turner, my favorite ancestor,

#NatTurner: 'Birth of a Nation' is more than just a film

... The violence in the film - reflective of true, historical events - is sure to earn it an "R" rating. There is also the issue of recent complaints from people like rapper Snoop Dogg, that they are tired of seeing slave narratives on both the big screen and small. But Parker said he disagrees and points to how differently the history of the Holocaust has been treated in the United States versus the history of slavery ...

The story of Nat Turner, who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831, is a risky one for Hollywood

I could give 2 s--ts about what so-called snoop dog and others like him have to say esp. when they have done nothing but pimped and exploited their own people. Man you want to talk about hypocrisy. Let them pool their resources together and put something out there that serves to uplift our people other than bs rap that undercuts the progress of African people and continues to perpetuate the negative stigma. This film will educate people about the African slaves who revolted against slavery and white imperialism, something which white history has failed to illuminate.

    :)

My exact same sentiments ... As a matter of fact, Baldwin said it best:

People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them.

Thank God for Nat Turner, preacher man struck fear in the oppressor .

Video: New Birth of a Nation trailer: Nat Turner rises up

Don’t let the inspirational music fool you. As the new trailer for Sundance sensation The Birth of a Nation progresses, it shows preacher Nat Turner (director and star Nate Parker) slowly form an armed rebellion among his fellow slaves. But as cathartic as it is to see oppressed people take up arms against their foes, it’s clear that there will be no happy ending to this story ...

The Birth of a Nation releases powerful 'living poster'

Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation is one of the most highly-anticipated movies out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It even struck a record-breaking distribution deal with Fox Searchlight. The Birth of a Nationreworks the title of D.W. Griffith’s controversial 1915 film (originally titled The Clansman) for a biopic of Nat Turner, who led a Virginian slave uprising in 1831. The movie’s theatrical release is still a few months away, but a new “living poster” is available now ...

    Nate Parker
    On The Confessions of #NatTurner

In Vanity Fair’s September Issue, writer Sam Tanenhaus, examines the literary legacy of William Styron’s controversial historical novel.

... PARKER: Styron published his novel at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, at a moment where Black Power was becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to passive resistance. Nat Turner’s choice to revolt echoed [powerfully] during that era in ways not seen since the American Revolution in the 18th century. Styron’s novel ignited much-deserved criticism as he annihilated Turner’s character, painting him to be both a sexually disturbed lunatic whose sole motivation hinged on his uncontrollable lusts for white women, and a rebel who lacked any real purpose or intelligence.

The Black Lives Matter movement provided a platform to bring race back into public discourse and remind the nation that racism is still very much with us. The truth is, we have never healed from slavery, because [we] have been unwilling to confront it honestly. When a nation refuses [to] admit its wrongs and its citizens aren’t able to discuss their shared histories and injuries, it cannot and will not heal ...
