Students, professors, teachers and unions around the country will organize today to protest America's imperiled system of education with more than 100 events in 32 states.

The movement started in California, where the public college system has been seized by tension and dissatisfaction over proposed tuition hikes, budget cuts and a series of racist events on University of California and California State campuses.

......SFSU students have also been busy creating demonstration props.

At UC Irvine, approximately 50 members of the school's Black Student Union gathered yesterday in front of the campus student center, wearing pieces of duct tape with "Do UC us" written on them over their mouths. The silent protest was held to show support for black students at UC

Since my roots are in student protest movement (aftermath of 76 Soweto Uprising) I will give the youth props for making a statement of "protest". This is a tradition similar to May Day programs. Again, the problem here is a lack of unified ACTION and agenda which can effectively challenge "gaps" created with the passage of legislation such as props 209 and 187, which were used to divide youth "activists" along racial lines (immigration reform), then against class/gender lines (anti-affirmative action). In effect, the Black/Chicano/Women's groups which characterized the student protest movement from th 60s through the anti-apartheid movement, were weakened when Black students failed to get behind support of Chicano/Latino struggle against us intervention in Central American and then were further divided when anti-immigrant legislation was proposed. Anti-affirmative action legislation then affected all groups but division among ranks widened, thus the present situation while not only fees are being hiked but outreach/retention programs are now either being cut, or are being put on the chopping block. So, the point here is that the protests are not simply about fee hikes.

The UC system, for example, in experiencing increasing incidents of 1) police abuse of students, and 2) racial incidents such as the Compton-theme party and noose incident at UC San Diego.

Student support workers and associated community service personnel are being furloughed and/or laid off. There are a lot of issues here which student protest can only bring attention to, but unless these students work harder to reconstruct allainces and work in a common front the system will escalate fees, while cutting programs and services, as it increasingly marginalizes inner-city youth while reinforcing and even recruiting an elitist "class" structure---one in which Black and Chicano-Latino students are the first to be eliminated.
