    Nappy Head Gal

    “You old nappy head gal”
    “Hold yo head still”
fo I pull all this nappy hair out.

    Pulling tugging hitting me
With the back of the brush.
This was the Saturday ritual the whole
    Time telling me to hush.

    “You old nappy head gal”
“didn’t I tell you to be still”?
“but mama”, you burnt me with the
hot comb! Ignoring me as she talks
to aunt Ruby on the phone, whispering
    sit still.

I can still feel the sting on my neck, as she
unravels the next plait. But soon it will be
over and pretty I will be, with silky shiny black
curls that will hang and swing then everyone can
    see.

Can’t say I look forward to next week, when this
old nappy head gal will be sitting in this same seat.

I remember the scene with my mama and sister...the house was always smelling like sulfer 8 grease...
