I think many of us look at race in a simplistic way. Your post was spot on when you dove deeper into the issue of how folk identify themselves. IMO, this is another area where cultural misunderstandings are common. We are so use to assuming that racial categories are biological rather than social, and you were correct in pointing this out....
I wonder if it occurs to many of us that people from other cultures have a different set of racial concepts and classify themselves and us differently. I will be the first to say that I have at times said that immigrants from other countries, for example Haiti or Jamaica "act as if they aren't black." I'm sure you've heard other say something to this effect. That was due to my cultural misunderstanding that in their country of origin, they may well not be black. But that doesn't mean that they think they are white......Ye feel me?
