I come from a land where my family toiled
To no avail
Where people live their lives preparing to die
Where your own neighbor hates you because your family
Can survive
Where a direct family can consist of twelve children
And these twelve children can decrease to
Nine, seven, five within a year.
A land of great poverty and loss
Yet in this land family bonds are strong
Where the courage of one can build a civilization
Where a village does raise a child
Where people don’t worry about the fads that we so often adore
But about there education so that they can survive
Find a way to prosper, live and help others survive as well.
I come from a place where I can say
Sak passe, map boule, nap manje deri koule
And just carried a full conversation
Where being who you are makes you beautiful
Not that modern beauty
But the beauty I see in my grandmother
The beauty of culture
The beauty that just is
The beauty of HAITI.
